Child Care Program Manager
Job Summary
The Student Parent Support Center performs a vital role at the University of Utah, by providing information and support to for students, faculty, staff and early childhood practitioners. UKids - Child Care Programs is a family of six child care programs providing child care for University students, faculty, staff, and patients of the University Health Care System.
This position is for an experienced Early Childhood Program Coordinator/Director. The UKids Child Care Programs are designed to meet the needs of University Student Parents, staff and faculty are part of the Student Affairs Department and operate under the supervision of the Student Parent Support Center. These programs are a dynamic learning and work environment that serve children between the ages of 6 weeks and 6 years on campus. Also including three drop-in child care centers in satellite locations in University Health Centers in Farmington, Sugar House and South Jordan.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children whose parents study, work and access services at University of Utah locations. Successful candidates must be innovative, goal-oriented and pro-active, with both classroom and administrative experience in an Early Childhood setting.
The Coordinator supports lead teachers in planning and implementing curriculum, ensuring goals and objectives are in accordance with established criteria. Interprets program policies and advises program participants to ensure positive outcomes for all. The coordinator is responsible for center budgeting and must meet stringent University standards in this area. In addition to the program coordinator, staff includes hourly office and teaching staff.
This job listing is currently hiring two positions, one on-campus Coordinator position and a Health Center Coordinator position. If you are hired for the health center position, travel to the satellite locations for monthly meetings, classroom staffing, and staff supervision and training, as needed, is required.
Responsibilities
- Knows and follows all Child Care Licensing rules
- Knows and follows all NAEYC accreditation standards
- Works collaboratively with the Student Parent Support Center to ensure best practices are implemented and program quality is maintained
- Oversees daily program operations and coordinates program activities within the guidelines of State Health and Child Care Licensing agencies
- Develops and implements program goals and objectives within NAEYC developmentally appropriate standards
- Coordinates multi-schedules for staff and clients
- Monitors program quality and effectiveness and implements improvement strategies as needed
- Establishes program budget within existing parameters; monitors and approves related expenditures and ensures budget goals are met
- Advises staff, students and others regarding program policies, goals and related classroom issues, as well as planning of staff meetings
- Prepares reports, financial statements and records on program status and progress for the Student Parent Support Center
- Writes and edits program related publications and promotional or educational materials (newsletters, marketing brochures, program website, and staff and parent handbooks)
- Assigns, directs and reviews work of support staff
- Assists with grant writing and other fundraising activities
- Implements marketing plans to maintain program growth and enrollment capacity
- Attends and participates in NAEYC and UAEYC, professional conferences, lectures and other professional development events

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.
Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.

Department Specific Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must be able to communicate effectively with children and their parents/guardians, both verbally and in writing.
- Sufficient vision to read small printed material as well as long distances across playgrounds and classrooms to supervise staff and children.
- Sufficient hearing to hear normal and telephone conversation.
- Ability to speak in an understandable tone with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation.
- Demonstrate effective communication with professionals, parents and children
- Ability to work independently but show a willingness to take direction from the supervisor
- Warm, energetic, and enjoy working with young children (6 weeks to 5 years)
- Must meet physical characteristics (with or without the use of aids):
- Able to move about on hands and knees and sit on the floor with children
- Lift small children (up to 50 lbs.)
- Carry small children in arms for short distances
- Exhibits physical stamina necessary for daily interaction with young children (walking, kneeling, sitting on floor, lifting up to 50 lbs., etc.) and the running of a dynamic child care business
- Physical dexterity to use a pen or pencil in a legible format, operate a computer keyboard and other devices
- Move up and down stairs freely
- Must pass a Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) background check
- Must be willing to obtain a food handler's permit, CPR/first aid training
- Demonstrated skills in multi-age programming for children and families
- Demonstrated skills in staff orientation, training and evaluation
- At least intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office and management software (ProCare experience preferred, however training will be provided)

Preferences:
- Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development with equivalent job experience.
- Five or more years of progressive experience in child care, Headstart or preschool administration, or experience in child care resource and referral working directly with child care administrators.
