Manager, Laboratory
Job Summary
Under minimal supervision, responsible for planning, organizing, directing and/or controlling all aspects pertaining to laboratory functions of assigned department's internal and external customer service, human resource and financial management operations pertaining to areas including (but not limited to) specimen maintenance, data collection, process management, standard operating procedure development and adherence, and outcomes monitoring. Acts as a catalyst between the department and its customers and staff to ensure continuity and quality of service and care.
Responsibilities
- Work with principal investigators (PIs) and the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) to develop, update, amend and renew animal protocols.
- Work with PIs to finalize individual study protocols and budgets and obtain all necessary signatures/approvals.
- Schedule applicable trainings and maintain training files for laboratory personnel (PIs, fellows, technicians, etc.).
- Address issues raised by Quality Assurance units (University and study sponsors) regarding research activities in the laboratory, including but not limited to development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), master study schedules and sponsor codes, and archiving of raw data.
- Coordinate with PIs and the University of Utah Office of Comparative Medicine (OCM) to schedule in vivo study procedures, obtain necessary vivarium visitor forms and training documentation.
- Work with laboratory personnel, the OCM and Moran finance to order supplies and animals needed for in vivo studies

Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 4 - 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.
Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.
