Division Chief, Health System Innovation & Research, Faculty Position
Details
The Department of Population Health Sciences seeks a vibrant and visionary scientist to lead the Division of Health System Innovation and Research (HSIR) within the Department of Population Health Sciences. The Department's key missions include research, education, community engagement, health disparities, and collaboration with clinical partners.
Candidates for the HSIR Division Chief should have a:
(1) proven track record of leadership,
(2) history of innovative and successful investigation,
(3) strong appreciation of diverse health service research areas, and
(4) commitment to program development, team science, mentoring across career stages, and education.
HSIR currently has 16 tenure/tenure track faculty and 7 research track faculty. Faculty overarching areas of interest including:
- Health Policy and Health Economics (including the Matheson Center for Health Care Studies),
- Implementation Science and Health System Improvement,
- Digital Health,
- Patient Centered Care and Decision Science, and
- Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics.
Many faculty hold joint appointments with the Veteran's Affairs (VA) including the Informatics Decision-Enhancement and Analytic Sciences (IDEAS) Center for Innovation (an HSR&D COIN). HSIR faculty mentor numerous junior faculty across campus, 1 postdoctoral scholar, and 5 PhD students. This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished health services researcher to lead a high-caliber program of engaged, multi-disciplinary investigators. About the Department of Population Health Sciences
The Department of Population Health Sciences had $27M in Research Expenditures in the last fiscal year and is a hub for education, investigation and methodological expertise in population health. Through a diverse faculty in three Divisions, including Cancer Population Sciences, Biostatistics, and HSIR, we provide expertise and infrastructure to advance capacity for impact-driven research, and support clinical professionals in providing better patient and population-oriented care in an increasingly complex health care delivery system. Through our research, education, and community engagement activities, we promote patient-centered health care and the delivery of evidence-based health innovations that improve population health and reduce health disparities within our community. QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should have a track record of successful, extramurally-funded health services research. Experience with integrating research into the health care setting is strongly desired. Demonstration of leadership capacity and ability to communicate effectively is essential. The position will entail engagement with individuals across a wide variety of clinical, operational, and investigative roles. The Division Chief will be charged with continuing to grow and sustain a program of excellence.
Applicants for Division Chief are expected to hold a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD (or equivalent), to have a proven track record of leadership experience, a history of successful mentoring and/or teaching, and evidence of an innovative and successful research career with peer-reviewed extramural funding. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines and departments and will have considerable strengths in interpersonal communication.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Division Chief is responsible for defining the vision of the division in collaboration with the Department Chair. The three Division Chiefs within the Department of Population Health Sciences work closely with the Department Chair to develop the overall vision and policies for this relatively new department. The Division Chief will also take a strong mentoring role with faculty. Finally, the Division Chief will work with faculty and the directors of graduate studies and postdoctoral fellowships to ensure a successful training experience for post-docs and graduate students.
Strategic Planning and Division Growth:
To succeed, HSIR must maintain its current trajectory in independent and collaborative research. Additionally, it is vital that the division continue as a cross-institutional resource that helps advance the University's clinical delivery system and outcomes assessment, while building robust, interdisciplinary collaboration for research and education. To this end, the Division Chief will engage with relevant academic department chairs, the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and University of Utah Medical Group leadership to develop and validate enhanced and innovative approaches to health care delivery and outcomes assessment, with the expectation that the vision and expertise of the Division Chief will inform program goals.
The Division Chief will also:
- Accelerate the University of Utah's progress toward becoming a
premier, top-ranked academic institution in health services
research
- Develop programmatic lines of research, such as implementation science; patient-centered digital health (e.g., apps, games, decision support interventions) and decision science; pharmacoepidemiology; and comparative effectiveness
- Expand the University's capacity in key methodological areas such as measurement of patient outcomes; simulation and modeling; and health economic and health policy analysis
- Recruit new health services researchers to the University of Utah Health Sciences
- Work collaboratively with other health systems in regional and national programs of research, innovation, and quality
- Partner with clinical leadership of University of Utah Health
Care
- Support the development of the University of Utah Healthcare system as a laboratory for advanced innovations in the design of healthcare delivery systems and health systems research
- Develop shared priorities between academic and clinical stakeholders to focus research activities on outcomes that matter to administrators, clinicians, academicians, patients, and society
- Coordinate with University of Utah Health Care / University of Utah Medical Group initiatives to understand and improve clinical value
- Continue to develop and refine HSIR's 1-, 3-, and 5-year strategic plan, including performance measures
Financial Accountability and Sustainability:
- Maintain a robust portfolio of external funding
- Develop and submit annual operating budgets and related documents
Personnel Management and Development:
- In collaboration with academic departments, support recruitment of new faculty members in health services research and related disciplines across the health sciences
- Mentor faculty, trainees and staff across disciplines and operational units to optimize program performance
LEADERSHIP CAPACITY
The Division Chief should:
- Be an accomplished mid-career to senior health services researcher who excels at interacting with clinicians, methodologists, and administrators
- Have a history of successful engagement in operational partnerships
- Have a record of forward-thinking leadership needed to help the Division, Department, and University of Utah Health Care prepare for and lead delivery system reform
- Have a national/international reputation in health services research
- Be able to serve as an advocate for the Division as a resource for the missions of the Health Sciences
- Have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple investigators with diverse research expertise and projects and to facilitate others' success
- Have a demonstrated ability to build successful interdisciplinary research teams, mentor early-career investigators, and obtain the committed support of stakeholders who are not paid or directly supervised by the incumbent
- Take an active role in partnering with the Director of Graduate Studies and Director of Postdoctoral Fellows to support the educational mission of the Department as well as pre- and post-doctoral trainees in the Division.
