The College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences ( CAFES ) at South Dakota State University ( SDSU ) is seeking an experienced and dynamic individual for the position of Assistant Dean and Director of the Institute of Global Agricultural Leadership. This position is responsible for the overall supervision, coordination, and communication within the Institute of Global Agricultural Leadership, as well as developing and teaching courses in the area of specialization of the Assistant Dean and Director. The incumbent will also play an active role in the CAFES administrative team, contributing to operations, meetings, committees, and collaborative initiatives that support the mission and success of CAFES . This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

CAFES is one of the eight colleges that make up South Dakota State University. Like the university, the college has a three-fold mission to teach, conduct research and deploy outreach programs to serve people in South Dakota, the nation, and the world. In addition to six academic departments, the college is home to both the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station ( AES ) and SDSU Extension. Extension and AES faculty and staff are distributed throughout the academic departments in CAFES and three additional SDSU colleges. Nearly all faculty have appointments in at least two of the mission areas. SDSU West River Research and Extension in Rapid City is an outreach facility of the college that supports teaching, research, and extension in the western part of the state. Other locations throughout the state include eight SDSU Extension Regional Centers and eight AES research field stations. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
This position plays a pivotal role in shaping the long-term success of the Institute of Global Agricultural Leadership. The Institute is dedicated to developing the human capital essential for the sustainable growth and prosperity of agriculture and rural communities in South Dakota.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Terminal degree in Agriculture or closely related field completed by first date of employment;
  • At least 5 years of experience in academic administration;
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and scholarship of teaching;
  • Must meet minimum qualifications for academic experience and service as outlined in the Departmental, College, and University standards for rank of Full Professor;
  • Highly effective written communication, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; and
  • Valid drivers license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Strong knowledge of agriculture education and agriculture production systems with experience in:
    • Developing policies, procedures, reporting, and tracking of information;
    • Leadership and supervision of Faculty;
    • Demonstrated excellence in teaching through national or international awards and recognition;
    • Demonstrated experience in administration of academic programs at the department, college, or university level;
    • Public relations which could include website development and other communication venues for the general public;
    • Obtaining extramural funding through grants and fundraising; and
    • Writing broadly collaborative grants and publications.
