Position Summary:
The University of Idaho invites applications for the position of Chair and Professor of the Department of Computer Science. The successful candidate will have an earned PhD in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a closely related area. Candidates for this position must meet the College promotion and tenure requirement for the rank of Associate or Full Professor. They will have established a successful collaborative research program and will provide evidence of strong teaching ability.

The candidate will be expected to teach courses in their area of expertise, mentor graduate students, and maintain a successful, collaborative, externally funded research program in line with the research mission of the university. They will support the teaching mission of the department at all levels and provide service to the university community. Startup funding, research support, and a reduced teaching load will be extended to help the new appointee.

The University of Idaho has a research center dedicated to cybersecurity research: the Center for Secure and Dependable Systems. Additionally, we have research centers dedicated to robotics: the Center for Intelligent Industrial Robotics (CI2R), data science: the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Sciences, transportation: the National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology, the Center for Advanced Energy Studies, and modeling: the Institute for Modeling Complex Interactions. Significant interdisciplinary research collaborations and well-established working relationships, including joint appointments, exist with National Labs and regional industry.

The University of Idaho is a land-grant research institution founded in 1889. It has a strong tradition of research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The CS department has expertise in cybersecurity, robotics, software engineering, embedded systems, ML, data science, programming languages and databases. This position will complement these existing strengths and leverage a large body of existing opportunities to collaborate across the University including our main (Moscow) and branch campuses (Idaho Falls and Coeur d'Alene).

Up to four weeks of summer salary will be available, to be negotiated annually with the dean.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science or closely related field.
  • Meet the College promotion and tenure requirement for the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
  • Leadership experience in an academic department
  • Experience in developing curriculum.
  • Experience in leading teams.
  • Experience in mentoring faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience teaching and conducting research in one or more areas of computer science.
  • Experience securing external funding and building an externally funded research program.
  • Experience working collaboratively with others.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Tenured with the rank of Full Professor at current institution.
  • National or International reputation as demonstrated through publications, awards, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively represent all constituents.
  • Experience pursuing and securing program accreditation and/or denominations such as ABET and CAE.
