Professor (or Associate Professor) / Department Head

The Department of Media Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for the position of Department Head. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure or Professor with tenure and will be effective August 1, 2025. The Department, with six full-time faculty and one administrative staff member, offers undergraduate degrees in Media Studies and focuses on the creative production and critical consumption of a range of moving-image media. The faculty is composed of award-winning artists, scholars, and practitioners and owns a soundstage, screening room, production classrooms, editing lab, audio recording studio, and location production equipment inventory. The Department enhances the curriculum with opportunities to learn outside of the traditional classroom setting and participate in a variety of media productions. These include the Department’s internship program and its client-based production clinic.

The Department seeks a leader with both significant scholarly achievements in the field of media studies and extensive administrative experience. Administrative responsibility includes, but is not limited to, department and program oversight, management of budgeted resources, general coordination of departmental personnel resources, and professional development of faculty and staff. Included in these functions are such activities as setting loads, making course assignments, establishing class schedules, assigning committee duties, and assigning advising loads, as well as assigning and supervising the work of non-faculty. Department heads are also charged with enforcing departmental, unit, University, and UNC System policies.

Candidates must hold a terminal degree in the field of Media Studies or a directly related field with evidence of outstanding teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service. In addition, the candidate should have credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Review of applications will begin on February 1, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit a cover letter, detailed curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of five professional references. Applications and inquiries will be kept confidential on request. In the cover letter, or as a separate attachment, a candidate should articulate their administrative philosophy and vision for the field of Media Studies. Submit applications or inquiries to Stuart Marcovitch, Chair, Media Studies Head Search Committee (s_marcov@uncg.edu).
