NYU Shanghai is now inviting applications for the position of Provost.
The Provost of NYU Shanghai will have a unique opportunity to provide strategic academic leadership of a pioneering institution in the world of global higher education. NYU Shanghai is both an educational leader in the Asia-Pacific region and, as NYU’s third degree-granting campus, in addition to New York and Abu Dhabi, a critical part of NYU’s vision for 21st-century education.
About NYU Shanghai
Founded in 2012, NYU Shanghai, located in the Pudong district of Shanghai, offers an unparalleled multi-cultural, multi-dimensional education to a mix of students, with roughly half of students coming from China and the other half from over 70 countries and regions globally. NYU Shanghai is the first Sino-U.S. joint research university and was established by NYU and East China Normal University. The New Bund campus is a magnet for leading scholars across a wide range of disciplines who have come together from over 30 countries to conduct research and teach in a forward-looking and constantly innovating environment. NYU Shanghai is committed, in its research, to the ideals of deep and innovative inquiry across all areas of scholarship and, in its teaching, to the ideals of creating global citizens and facilitating cross-cultural exchange. With a rapidly growing body of alumni, in addition to its students and faculty, NYU Shanghai has evolved over its first twelve years to become a community of people committed to a global outlook and to contributing to the well-being of the world around them.
NYU Shanghai has over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students from around the world. Undergraduate students pursue a rigorous and intensely personalized course of study. The core curriculum is based on six pillars of thought -- Social and Cultural Foundations, Writing, Mathematics, Science, Algorithmic Thinking, and Language -- that are designed to equip students with mindsets and methods that will serve them well in the 21st century. Students benefit from being part of NYU’s unique educational model, which provides them with opportunities to study away at NYU’s two other degree-granting campuses and at its 13 global sites around the world. Students graduate from NYU Shanghai with both an NYU diploma and a Chinese-accredited diploma.
NYU Shanghai is home to more than 300 faculty members, all of whom have research or teaching experience from leading international universities. It supports both fundamental and applied research, and it currently has 11 research centers and institutes studying a wide range of topics in the humanities, sciences, engineering, and business. NYU Shanghai faculty have a unique opportunity to conduct research both locally and in close collaboration with researchers at NYU’s other campuses and sites.
In all its activities, NYU Shanghai operates in accord with the values of curiosity, rigor, integrity, respect, harmony, responsibility, and deep engagement with all humanity.
The Role
The Provost will serve as chief academic officer of NYU Shanghai and will be responsible for formulating NYU Shanghai’s academic strategies and priorities, supporting its twin teaching and research missions, and enabling innovation on both dimensions. The position requires deep expertise in managing a strong and cohesive leadership team, coordinating with the deans and other senior leaders at NYU Shanghai, and promoting principles of good faculty governance. The Provost will report directly to the Vice Chancellor of NYU Shanghai and serve as their closest academic and strategic partner. The position also calls for active and effective engagement with counterparts at East China Normal University and with the leadership at NYU New York and NYU Abu Dhabi, to ensure alignment of academic endeavours across all three degree-granting campuses of NYU.
