Admissions Counselor - Access Focus
The Opportunity
The Admissions Team in the Division of Enrollment Management welcomes applications for an Admissions Counselor - Access Focus. The position is a 12-month year-round position that exists to thoroughly engage in undergraduate recruitment efforts through actively communicating the benefits of a Mines education to prospective students, their parents, counselors, and other community organizations. The Admissions Counselor is primarily responsible for visiting high schools, advising prospective students and their families on admissions to Mines, and evaluating applications for admission, educating the community on the enrollment process, and other general Admissions Office activities. In addition, the Admissions Counselor will serve as the lead Admissions staff person in identifying, developing and facilitating Mines' student recruitment efforts focusing on access and communities traditionally underrepresented in STEM majors. The Admissions Counselor will be expected to work collaboratively with the campus community and he or she will routinely be expected to work on weekends and evenings. Extensive travel will be required with many of these activities.

Responsibilities
Recruitment and Outreach (40%)
- Represent Mines at scheduled college day/night programs
throughout Colorado and schedule individual high school visits to
recruit students to Mines.
- Build relationships with Community Based Organizations that
support post-secondary enrollment
- Assigned to manage and independently coordinate the programming
outreach with school districts and Community Based Organizations
that have a high percentage of underserved students.
- Utilize Mines' enrollment strategy and resources to develop and
choose the schools to visit, tailor the communications, and track
the outreach determined to best fit the unique needs of these
schools and student populations.
- Support the pre-collegiate initiatives at Mines, including
summer programs and conferences, specifically for underrepresented
students developing future application interest.
- Responsible for tracking and evaluating statistical data on the
recruitment of underrepresented students specific to
Mines.
On and Off Campus Programming (30%)
- Routinely meet with prospective students and their families as
part of the Admissions Office on-campus, individual, and small
group tour information sessions.
- Occasionally meet one-on-one with students, which includes a
review of students' academic progress and a candid assessment of
students' potential for admission and scholarship
consideration.
- Counsel students and parents before and after admission through
to enrollment.
- Provide support for the fall and spring on campus visitation
programs hosted by Admissions.
- Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: student
registration, program set-up, presentation moderation, and
assisting in the preparation of marketing materials for the
programs.
- Plan and support other on and off campus visitor programs such
as group tours and recruitment or yield events specific to targeted
populations, and represent Mines through involvement with
professional or community organizations that promote a similar
mission to that of Mines Admissions Office.
First Year Students Application Review (25%)
- Serve as a member of the Freshman Admissions Evaluation
Team.
- Responsible to independently make admission decisions and then
counsel students on those decisions.
- Work closely with the Mines academic and administrative
faculty, and other personnel, to facilitate successful recruitment,
admission, and enrollment of new students to Mines.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
- Other duties as assigned to meet the objectives and goals of
the program and/or Mines.
Decision Scope:
This position must be able to work independently and make decisions based on current policy established within the Admissions office as well as defined by institutional regulations and best practices. The Admissions Counselor will frequently make decisions on:
- Student Admissions decisions. This position must work
collaboratively with fellow admissions staff, and independently, to
make admission decisions that are in the best interest of the
student and his or her success. Position must ascertain when
student may be a good candidate for Mines.
- Recruitment decisions. This position must analyze information
to determine the most appropriate partnerships to develop
relationships with, and represent Mines, to the high schools,
community colleges, colleges and community groups that present a
pipeline of potential students who could be successful Mines
graduates. This position must determine strategies to engage
prospective students and their families to support the goals of the
recruitment plan.
Communications:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are critical to be successful in this position. VERBAL - this position meets frequently with students and their families, individually and in groups, and must have the ability to explain recruitment, admissions, and enrollment processes clearly and concisely. The position will also communicate frequently with their supervisees, the Admissions team, campus departments, and external organizations. WRITTEN - this position will communicate through email to explain recruitment, admissions, and enrollment processes clearly. Accurate and concise information must be presented in all written communications.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or
university
- Valid driver's license and current, valid personal auto
insurance
- Moderate demonstrated experience working on a student services
office within a high school, pre-collegiate program or college
setting with students including those from socially, racially and
ethnically diverse populations
- Strong public speaking, written, and oral communication skills
are a must
- Applicants must possess excellent organizational and
interpersonal skills and be highly detail-oriented
- Travel needs of the positions require successful applicants to
be experienced both working independently as well as within a
team
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 plus years of prior experience working in a college or
university admissions office
- Fluency in Spanish
- Familiarity with integrated student information systems (i.e.,
Banner or similar system) and CRM's (i.e., Slate) as well as word
processing, spreadsheet and database programs
Salary Rate and Benefits
$55,000 - $57,000
Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate's education, training and experience as well as the position's scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
