Part-Time ESL Staff Instructor (Adjunct)
Position Summary:
The part-time instructor prepares learners to meet their academic, performative, and personal challenges through specific, blended, and integrative learning that includes both in and out of the classroom responsibilities. Courses, instruction, and engagement are designed and delivered in a manner that promotes student success. The part-time instructor teaches a full range of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses including Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Listening and Speaking to non-native speakers. The instructor is responsible for preparatory and instructional activities necessary to deliver effective ESL training with efficiency and expediency. These include needs assessment, ongoing assessment, and one-on-one meetings with students. Other duties include professional development as needed. A special focus on innovation supports a context that will make the English as a Second Language Program (ESLP) unique in its ability to combine expediency in language acquisition with integrity and quality. Must be able to support and promote the University's mission.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
A) A Bachelor's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) or related field, combined with ESL teaching certification. These qualifications will afford teaching at the BICS (basic interpersonal communication skills) levels. These are the first three levels out of a total of six. B) A Master's degree in TESOL or a related field combined with teaching certification to teach CALPS (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency). These qualifications will afford the candidate to teach across all levels.
Experience:
- Preferably three years of ESL teaching experience in support of college-level students or comparable experience that connects English for academic purposes with adult learners.
- Preferably meaningful understanding and demonstrated applied knowledge of second language acquisition, linguistic-specific pedagogy, and facilitation within the classroom.
- Exposure to and understanding of nontraditional approaches to language acquisition or a receptivity to such exposure and understanding inclusive of shorter and more frequent periods of ESL training.
- Exposure to diverse cultural contexts and multicultural sensibilities; demonstrated respect for and tolerance of cultural differences.
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility and fluidity in an environment known for diversity, cultural variances, and unanticipated needs.
