Summary

The lab is studying the role of allorecognition in development and in sociality in the soil amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum, a solitary, non-pathogenic protist that exhibits cooperative multicellular development upon starvation. Research technician to assist a graduate student and a faculty member in conducting basic laboratory tasks that includes molecular biology and cell culture. The job requires the use of basic laboratory skills, and technical and academic knowledge to follow established procedures and record results. This position is part-time 20 hours/week.

Job Duties
  • Prepares and conducts laboratory research experiments that includes PCR, gel electrophoresis.
  • Prepares and analyses plasmid DNA and genomic DNA, transformation of D. discoideum amoebae and E. coli bacteria, light and fluorescence microscopy.
  • Collects and analyzes data on the growth and development of D. discoideum amoebae in pure populations and in chimerae between different strains.
  • Prepares growth media, plates and buffers.
  • Maintains laboratory stocks, order and cleanliness.
  • Participates in weekly laboratory meetings.
  • Assists a graduate student and a faculty member in conducting basic laboratory tasks that includes molecular biology and cell culture.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Be willing to learn new experimental and intellectual skills and work collaboratively with a small group of dedicated scientists.
