Summary
The Department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a caring, compassionate and reliable Medical Assistant II to support the clinicians providing primary care services to private practice patients.
As a Medical Assistant II, you will assist in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the provider. The main responsibilities include interviewing patients, measuring vital signs (ie. pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height) and recording information in the patient electronic health record using EPIC. Shifts may include variations of 7:30-4:30; 8:00-5:00; 8:30-5:30, or 9:30-6:30 Monday- Friday.
Job Duties
- Greets patients and escorts them to exam rooms.
- Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, and in some cases administering point of care tests, and performing EKGs.
- Answers clinic telephones and resolves issues or routes calls to appropriate person.
- Collects patient histories, including medication reconciliation.
- Correctly collects and labels patient specimens for lab analysis.
- Sets up instruments and equipment according to department protocol for patient procedures.
- Schedules patient tests and appointments and prepares patient charts.
- Maintains exam rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
- Takes an inventory of clinic supplies and orders new supplies and equipment.
- Manages patient medical records.
- Floats to other FCM clinic locations and staffs central college sites as needed.
- Educates patients about their conditions and self-care.
- Assists providers in filling out health related paperwork for patients.
- Performs patient outreach.
- Cross trains to gain proficiency in staffing Comm Center, monitoring inventory and converting visits to virtual appointments.
- Assists with scheduling patient check-in.
- Monitors assigned provider baskets and/or departmental providers' message in-baskets, completes high priority messages, and address incoming patient encounters.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
- Two years of relevant experience.
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, or AMCA).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously in all interactions with management, patients, and peers.
- Knowledge of health care field and medical terminology.
- Ability to type at a minimum of 40 WPM.
- Proficiency in Spanish or other language.
- Ability to be reliable, flexible, and report to work as scheduled with minimal exceptions.
- Ability to follow directions, policies, and procedures.
