Hong Kong Baptist University is a leading research liberal arts university in Asia. Founded in 1968, the School of Communication has three departments of 1) Journalism; 2) Communication Studies; and 3) Interactive Media. Together they offer seven programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate (MA, MPhil, PhD) levels to 2,000 students. As a leading school in the Asia-Pacific region, its faculty members work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary academic environment that entails collaboration across multiple fields of study. The newly established Al Media Center is at the forefront of pioneering research in media and communication, bringing together scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including communication studies, journalism, computer science, interaction design, gaming, animation, etc., to leverage Al technologies and develop cutting-edge research projects and applications to tackle current and future challenges.

Department Highlights

•    Department of Journalism (JOUR): Recognised as one of the best-known journalism faculties in Hong Kong, many top media professionals in the city are our graduates, including the top executives of some leading media organisations. It offers an undergraduate major in Journalism and Digital Media, with concentrations in Journalism and Digital &. Media Communication;
•    Department of Communication Studies ( COMS): This department is at the forefront of strategic communication and advertising research and education in Hong Kong. It has formed a critical mass of master's and doctoral students specialising in strategic communication and related fields. The department offers bachelor degrees in Advertising and Branding, as well as Public Relations; and
•    Department of Interactive Media (IMD): The IMD aims to nurture students to be the next generation of communication professionals poised to harness the latest digital media technologies to effectively deliver intended messages to target audiences with interactive and engaging contents on diverse media platforms. With over twenty years of consolidated experience of game design and interactive application, computer animation, and visual communication, the department offers the Game Design and Animation ( GDA) and Interactive Media Publishing (IMP) programmes. Both are first-of-its-kind in Hong Kong tertiary education.

Responsibilities:

We seek scholars with (the potential of developing) a strong, innovative and potentially interdisciplinary research program, and a track record that demonstrates the evidence or promise of external funding. The successful candidate will be expected to:

•    Conduct innovative and cutting-edge research and contribute to the research strengths of the Department;
•    Deliver quality teaching and supervision in relevant discipline(s) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
•    Obtain competitive research grants;
•    Engage in professional, institutional and community services; and
•    Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to promote interdisciplinary initiatives and research opportunities.

Requirements:

•    Hold a Ph.D. degree in related tield(s);
•    Demonstrate evidence of an active and independent research program;
•    Demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching;
•    Have an outstanding record of peer-reviewed publications and competitive research grants for appointments at senior ranks;
•    Demonstrate evidence or promise of research and teaching that integrate communication and media theories into the relevant disciplines, and user experience will be highly desirable; and
•    Show a good fit with the existing department's strengths.

The initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract of up to three years commencing September 2025 or on a mutually agreed date. Re-appointments thereafter will be subject to performance and mutual agreement. Tenured appointments are expected to be attained in 6 years. Outstanding candidates at Associate Professor or above may be considered for walk-in tenure on appointment.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
