ACADEMIC PROGRAM SPECIALIST

Introduction (Description of School/College/Dept/Program)
The mission of the Helen Bader Office of Applied Gerontology is to promote optimal aging and strengthen connections with community partners by advancing opportunities in gerontology education, research and training for students, faculty, and the community.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Endowed Chair, Office of Applied Gerontology, this position coordinates certain education and program initiatives in the Office of Applied Gerontology (OAG). This position will collaborate with campus Schools and Colleges and the wider community to foster interdisciplinary growth and maturation of aging education and training initiatives. This is a 51% fixed term academic staff position.
Job Responsibilities

20% Coordination of the Graduate Certificate in Applied Gerontology (GCAG)
  • Coordinate GCAG course inclusion across campus units, and the necessary governance structure for GCAG function and change.
  • Manage student enrollment and advising
  • Notify certificate students about scholarship opportunities.
  • Revise curriculum to ensure that the courses in the certificate program have significant content in aging and that the certificate adheres to acceptable standards for gerontological education.
  • Promote and publicize GCAG, including promoting the Online Option to professionals in the community

15% Coordination of Undergraduate Social Work Minor in Aging (MIA)
  • Manage student enrollment and advising.
  • Notify MIA students about scholarship opportunities
  • Promote and publicize the Minor to undergraduate social work students

15% Coordination of the Undergraduate Certificate in Healthy Aging (UCHA)
  • Coordinate the reimplantation of the UCHA
  • Coordinate revision of the curriculum to adhere to acceptable standards for gerontological education
  • Manage student enrollment and advising

15% Serve as Advisor of Student Gerontology Association (SGA)
  • Meet regularly with SGA to provide support
  • Attend SGA meetings and events as availability allows
  • Help to recruit SGA officers and members
  • Promote and publicize SGA to student at UWM

15% Co-Coordinate with team members on OAG events
  • Assist with planning the Open House
  • Assist with planning the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Even
  • Assist with planning the Artistic Representations of Aging Event
  • Assist with the planning of other OAG events as needed

20% Other related duties
  • Maintain membership on committees that are relevant to the position such as BSW Committee, MSW Online Advisory Committee, and HBSSW Scholarship Committee.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters in social work (MSW)
  • At least 5 years’ experience in social work practice
  • Certified AARP Disrupt Aging Educator or similar certification
  • At least 5 years’ experience developing and revising gerontology curriculum
  • At least 5 years’ experience with student advising in a higher education setting
  • At least 5 years’ experience supervising and coordinating internships

Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensure at the APSW or higher
  • Event planning experience
  • Ability to develop relationships with a wide variety of community stakeholders
  • Ability to work cross campus developing curriculum and aging initiatives
  • Experience working with student organizations or associations
