The University makes available a broad array of credit and non-credit courses, seminars, and workshops through the Division of Extended Studies. Some programs are offered on campus and others at off-campus sites including in Colorado Springs, at Fort Carson, in Douglas County, in Huerfano County, and at public high schools throughout the state of Colorado, and more.

The Division of Extended Studies (ES) provides courses to full-time, part-time, and nontraditional students. Many educational methods -  classroom instruction, correspondence courses, online courses, conferences, workshops, and seminars - are utilized to expand educational access and meet the needs of students at convenient times and settings. Students may earn academic credit toward a degree, study for career advancement, or pursue cultural and avocational interests.

The Independent Study Academic Advisor reports to the Associate Director of Academic Pathways & Programs and is responsible for providing student advising for External Degree Program majors, justice-involved individuals, and students pursuing non-degree coursework through Independent Study. The advisor is required to be familiar with all bachelor’s degrees on campus and able to assist students in making plans for degree completion. This full-time administrative professional position advises students taking courses through both the Independent Study Program and through classroom instruction at various off-campus sites. This position must have the knowledge and ability to assist with required paperwork associated with other campus departments (Registrar’s Office,Graduation, Financial Aid).

Primary Duties

Student Services

  • Processes official and unofficial advising forms, petitions of credit, graduation contracts and student correspondence; tracks admissions applications and student progress.
  • Explains potential course transferability, and academic policies and procedures to students and staff.
  • Assists in helping students locate potential transfer courses for degree completion when needed.  
  • Actively works with GAP students toward degree completion.

Outreach and Marketing

  • Recommends and participates in educational fairs, professional associations and community outreach activities designed to generate enrollment growth for assigned programs. 
  • Assists with outgoing written correspondence to students, parents and community partners and telephone calls for recruitment purposes. 
  • Promotes life-long learning throughout the region.

Partnerships

Assists Associate Director with the maintenance of professional relations agreements with other third-party entities, academic departments and other campus units operating in partnership with assigned programs.

Division and University Affairs

  • Participates in Division and University affairs in Pueblo and throughout the region that enhance the assigned programs' performance and quality profile.
  • Ensures that the advising process and marketing materials conform to relevant university and state policies, procedures and accreditation practices. 
  • Works collaboratively and effectively with department chairs and admissions, records and financial aid staff to assist students with academic processes.

Salary Range 

$48,000 - $50,000

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and enterprise information systems
  • Effective written communication skills
  • Experience with, or commitment to, working in a team environment with a diverse population of students 
  • Experience in a position or activity that required effective verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Knowledge of college admissions, advising, enrollment and financial aid procedures
  • Knowledge of regional accreditation and higher education regulatory processes
  • Experience with Banner, Slate and Starfish
  • Professional experience in higher education academic advising 
  • Experience with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act 
  • Experience in adult education programs
