The Department of Sport and Entertainment Management at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a tenure-track faculty 9-month position at the Assistant Professor level. We are seeking a forward-thinking scholar whose research and teaching integrate sustainability as a core business strategy, creating value while addressing environmental challenges in the sport, entertainment, and venue management industries. Key duties and responsibilities of the position are reflected as follows: Develop and teach courses that emphasize sustainable business strategies, ensuring students are well-prepared to meet industry needs. Engage in interdisciplinary research and build industry partnerships to promote sustainability as a value-driven approach. Contribute to curriculum development, ensuring that students are well-prepared to meet the industry’s evolving needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in Sport and Entertainment Management or a related discipline by the start date of employment. Teaching and research interests in Sustainability in Sport and Entertainment. An active research agenda with a demonstrated ability to generate impactful, peer-reviewed research in premier outlets. Strong evidence of (or potential to attract) external funding. A demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality classroom instruction. Conduct research in sustainability, with a focus on its applications in Sport and Entertainment Management. Relevant publications in top-tier journals, showcasing expertise in sustainability. Experience in implementing sustainability strategies that drive business value is highly desirable. Ability to teach classes in a secondary core area of the department (sport and entertainment marketing, finance or event management; college athletics; sales, etc.). Strong teaching and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to students from diverse backgrounds.
Organization Overview: The University of South Carolina (USC), founded in 1801, is an eight-campus state system, with a total enrollment of 53,455 students. The main campus in Columbia has a student population of approximately 38,000 and is categorized by the Carnegie Foundation as having "very high research activity" and excellent curricular community engagement. The Department of Sport and Entertainment Management consists of over 30 full time faculty, many of whom are NASSM/SMA Research Fellows, editors or review board members of top tier academic journals, executive officers of leading discipline-focused associations, and engaged sport industry leaders. The department offers a BS degree in Sport and Entertainment Management, an MS in Sport and Entertainment Management, an MBA/MSEM combination master’s degree, a Ph.D. in Sport and Entertainment Management, and is consistently ranked by Sport Business International as a world leader in the delivery of Sport Management programs. Further, the department is housed in the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management, offers a wide range of tertiary academic programs and research, affording interdisciplinary opportunities for students and faculty. There are two research centers in the department: the College Sport Research Institute (CSRI) and the Center for the Advancement of Sport and Entertainment (CASE). Annually, the department hosts the Sport, Entertainment, and Venues Tomorrow conference (SEVT) and the College Sport Research Institute Conference (CSRI). With deep ties to the sport and entertainment industry and several industry leaders in faculty positions, the department regularly features executive lectures and industry panels, hosts guest speakers and high-profile visitors, and conducts a wide range of consulting projects for key constituents.
Join us in leading the transformation of sport and entertainment management through strategic sustainability. Initial review of applicants will commence January 20, 2025 and continue until the position is filled. The appointment start date will be August 16, 2025. Salary is 86K – 91K, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
