Position Purpose
Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Community and Campus Life, the Chief of Staff has oversight of the daily operations, staff management, and financial administration of the Office for Community and Campus Life; manages recruitment and hiring of staff, graduate students, and student workers; ensures the communication processes, structures, and strategies within the Office and between the Office of Community Relations (CR), Community Life and Inclusivity ( CLAI ), Outdoor Programs Office ( OPO ), and The William Jewett Tucker Center (Tucker), as well as other departments at Dartmouth; and provides counsel on key community issues in higher education and Dartmouth College more specifically.

- Minimum of 5-7 years prior experience with demonstrated experience in a fast-paced, high-pressure office
- Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, writing, and speaking skills
- Knowledge of Higher Education
- Experience with project management
- Experience writing, editing, and producing organizational communications
- Ability to work alone and take appropriate initiative, but also coordinate in a team
- Ability to handle highly confidential information with discretion and judgment
- Ability to think strategically, able to recognize what is of strategic importance, and continually point colleagues in that direction and help them set priorities
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with faculty, students, staff and other constituents
- Ability to work independently and to handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously
- Ability to plan, lead, and execute projects
- Ability to foster a collaborative work environment and initiate campus partnerships
- Master’s degree
- Demonstrated experience creating strategic partnerships across departments and stakeholders
- Demonstrated fiscal acumen and experience in budget development and oversight
- Ability to understand and articulate issues facing institutions and higher education

Description
Fiscal and Office Administration
- Oversees the financial administration of the Office including all aspects of fiscal planning, institutional budgeting, regular bookkeeping, and approval of contracts and grant submissions. Supports the management of the department’s budget in consultation with the Senior Vice President and the Fiscal Officer of the division.
- Oversees the daily operations, special projects, and crisis situations in the Office.
- Implements institutional policies and modifies administrative practices in support of the department’s activities and responsibilities, developing consistent processes and procedures.
- Gathers departmental reports and compiles them into one report.
- Monitors and evaluates organizational performance metrics and analyzes company operations. Identifies areas of improvement across the organization and makes actionable recommendations.
- Keeps meetings focused, on time, and effectively plans and coordinates them.

Strategy and Innovation
- Helps the SVP prioritize tasks and make decisions. Provides strategic direction and recommendations for initiatives. Secures strategic opportunities for the SVP and the President.
- Works with the SVP and directors of the CR, CLAI, OPO, and Tucker to build and maintain key relationships. Collaborates with executives and department heads to unify the organization.
- Acts as a project manager on key initiatives. Coordinates additional special projects as assigned. Completes projects with skillful oversight and support.
- Serves as the SVP’s designee as directed for committee meetings as needed.
- Identifies and conveys key information as well as provides counsel to the SVP on DEI matters at Dartmouth.
- Anticipates and recognizes problems and/or issues and brings them to the attention of appropriate team members.
- Stays abreast of issues in society and higher education and anticipates how they might play out at Dartmouth.

Communications
- Represents the Senior Vice President to internal and external constituents in a professional and positive manner and serves as the primary office contact for individuals seeking contact with the Senior Vice President.
- Develops standard expectations and processes for internal communications. Oversees strategic communications with CR, CLAI, OPO, and Tucker and as necessary with Dartmouth’s Office of Communications.
- Communicates with internal stakeholders including Advancement, President’s office, General Counsel, Sponsored Projects, etc.
- Coordinates the Office’s external communications including its website, annual reports, newsletter, promotional materials, and materials for solicitation as needed.
- Coordinates and supports events managed by the Office or in collaboration with other offices/departments within Dartmouth.
