Position Description:

The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts at Florida International University invites applicants for the position of full time, nine-month, tenure earning Assistant Professor of Jazz Saxophone/Jazz Big Band Director. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate applied jazz saxophone and the studio jazz big band. Additional teaching responsibilities may include jazz arranging, jazz improvisation, jazz theory, jazz ear training, jazz history, jazz pedagogy, advanced jazz techniques, and other ensembles. The successful candidate is expected to be an active and effective recruiter for the jazz performance area and to participate in service to the department, college, university, and profession. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's in Music (MM) degree is required

Applicant should be an outstanding and active professional jazz saxophonist with a strong record of teaching and performance Experience directing large ensembles/jazz big band  

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral degree Nationally and/or internationally recognized recording artist and performer

Record of successful teaching experience at the university level

Demonstrated capacity for effective community engagement and recruitment at the collegiate level

Collegial attitude, strong organizational, management, and communication skills
