Phillips Academy seeks a full-time, continuing Instructor in Studio Art to begin in September of 2025. Strong candidates will be practicing artist-educators who have demonstrated skill and experience teaching high-school students in both studio foundations and ceramics, as well as experience with interdisciplinary visual-arts teaching and inclusive classroom practices.
The teaching assignment will consist of three or four class sections per trimester, with two- levels of ceramics electives within a hand-building curriculum. Our program is high-fire reduction with responsibilities that include firing downdraft gas kilns, glaze preparation and all other aspects of maintaining a fully functioning ceramic studio. All instructors in the department teach Visual Studies, our ninth-grade foundations course. There may also be opportunities to teach interdisciplinary classes in collaboration with other departments throughout the school. We seek dynamic candidates who will be active participants not only in the academic program but also in the athletics/fitness and residential programs at this boarding school. A Master’s degree or higher in fine arts and/or arts education and at least three years of high-school teaching experience are preferred.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Please visit our application portal (www.andover.edu/about/employment) to submit a cover letter (addressed to Ms. Merrilee Mardon, Dean of Faculty, Phillips Academy), résumé, unofficial or official transcripts for higher education, exhibition record, and contact information for three professional references, including one direct supervisor. Also attach a single PDF file that contains web links to your portfolio (or an embedded portfolio of your work) and a portfolio of student work and sample course syllabi to your submission. Letters of reference are not required but can be submitted to this email address: PAFac@andover.edu with your full name and the position for which you’re applying noted in the subject line. We are not able to accept other materials by e-mail or anything by regular mail.
Phillips Academy is an intentionally diverse and inclusive residential community. In your cover letter, please address directly your experience and interest in working in such a school community. We welcome applications from individuals who identify with groups typically underrepresented in independent school settings.
Phillips Academy is an equal opportunity employer. Any offers of employment will be contingent upon successful CORI/SORI and fingerprinting background checks, as well as unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
