Sergeant, Shift Supervisor - Night Shift
Under the direction of the Lieutenant, Operations Commander, Provides direct supervision of Public Safety officers, dispatchers, drivers, and student staff to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. Sergeant will supervise Public Safety Officers to provide ensure high profile, uniformed public safety and security services for the University campus and community.

Essential Functions:
- Provides leadership and supervision to Public Safety officers, dispatchers, drivers, and student staff on assigned shifts.
- Makes decisions concerning work assignments on assigned shifts. Delegates tasks to public safety officers and staff. Ensures the effective, efficient, and professional completion of all work requirements for assigned shifts as required.
- Keeps the Director, Assistant Director and Operations Lieutenant apprised of all important information and serves as the department ranking officer in their absence.
- Respond to issues and conflicts within the team quickly and effectively, reaching out for help from the manager as necessary.
- Responsible for specialized areas of assignment (i.e. crime prevention programming) as assigned by the Director, Assistant Director, or Operations Lieutenant.
- Performs active and regular patrols (foot, bicycle or vehicle) of all campus areas.
- Provides effective response, investigation and documentation of routine and emergency calls for service, unusual or criminal incidents, medical emergencies, and fire and burglary alarm activations.
- Close and regular surveillance of campus properties, including locking and unlocking buildings according to designated schedules.
- Enforces University rules and regulations.
- Assists with all traffic and parking-related responsibilities.
- Sets high standards and Acts as a knowledgeable resource to Faculty, Staff, Students, and Visitors to the University. Provides general information such as directions as well as more up-to-date information about campus University-related events.
- Creates written reports and other documentation as necessary and appropriate (i.e. patrol logs, incident reports, parking surveys, etc.)
- Establishes relationships with the University Community through attendance at Crime Prevention sessions, campus events, and through routine patrol functions to build rapport and increase overall feeling of safety.

Work Schedule: The Department of Public Safety is staffed 24/7/365, including on weekends and holidays. Officers must be able to work any shift assigned as well as mandatory overtime. This position works 40 hours per week.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Associate degree preferred. Supervisory experience is preferred.
- Must have valid certification through VA DCJS as a Campus Security Officer, First Aid/CPR/AED certification, and ICS-100 or able to obtain certification within 180 days of hire, including
- Must be able to be recertified as required and maintain valid certification at all times during the term of employment.
- Prior law enforcement or security experience is preferred.
- Officers must be able to provide a high degree of reliability, have the ability to maintain confidentiality, and work independently as well as part of a team.
- It is critical that the Officer relate well to students, faculty, and a diverse community.
- Applicant should have a working knowledge of computer programs such as email, word processing, and basic spreadsheets.
- Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license and a good driving history.
- Must be able to pass an extensive background check.

Campus Safety and Welfare Responsibilities:
- This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority
(CSA) in accordance with the Clery Act. This position is required
to report Clery qualifying crimes to the Department of Public
Safety and complete annual training about your reporting
responsibilities under the law.
Physical Requirements:
- Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and
palm.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly
for long distances or moving from one work site to
another.
- Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for
sustained periods of time.
- Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any
direction.
- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something
with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or
outward.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to
draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or
moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor
is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the
substantial use of the upper extremities and back
muscles.
Working Conditions:
- The worker is subject to both environmental conditions:
Activities occur inside and outside.
- The worker is subject to extreme cold: Temperatures typically
below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Consideration
should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions
such as wind and humidity.
Types of Work: Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
