Description

The Director of the University Store is responsible for the coordination and the overall management of all store operations including retail, textbook rental and sales, inclusive access, online sales, and at off-site locations including Missouri Innovation Campus, Walton Stadium, Hughes Athletics Center, event vending, etc. The Director is responsible for the direction and determination of goals, objectives, and the development and implementation of procedures and processes to achieve these goals. The director oversees the management of services and staff and plans and administers the departmental budget. The Director oversees departmental assessment efforts, remains informed of emerging trends and technologies, and actively engages in professional development to ensure store operations implement appropriate changes, tools, and programs that support customer service and the university mission and strategic plan. The Director collaborates with academic programs to remain informed of changes in course offerings, degree programs, and new initiatives; and partners with university departments and external entities on programming and services to enrich the experience of the University’s students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the community.

Examples of Duties

Provides leadership and vision to the administration and management of the University Store and its departments to include assessment efforts, budget preparation, program development, marketing strategies, supervision of staff, and evaluation of personnel and services.

Supervisory - 20%
Hire, train, lead and evaluate key personnel for the University Store.

Administrative - 40%
Directs strategic planning efforts for the University Store including but not limited to financial goals, equipment additions, and customer service improvements. .
Directs the day-to-day operation of the University Store. Work with FPO regarding custodial and maintenance and Public Safety regarding security and access
Develops, implements and interprets policies and procedures for the University Store in response to changes in the internal and external environments.

Financial / Budgetary - 20%
Maintain annual budget (more than 3 million) and apply fiscal and budgetary planning techniques within financial constraints and keeping within University objectives, policies and procedures. Monitors all purchasing decisions. Develops bid specifications for the procurement of necessary services, goods, and software.
Partner with the University's Accounting Services Office and Student Accounts and Loans for posting charges and credits to individual student accounts for purchases made from University Store operations and to reconcile this activity with store operations to ensure students accounts are accurate.
Collaborate with Student Accounts and UCM Athletics for transactional support and reporting for students receiving financial awards external to traditional financial aid, and with store systems provider, Accounting Services and IT, for the automation of financial data to University financial systems.

Program Development - 10%
Develops new initiatives and strategic plans for University Store including procedural and customer service improvements.
Collaborates with university departments, administrators and external entities for special events, new products and services. Meets with vendors regarding course materials, curriculum, copyright management and new products.
Involved with academic community to remain informed of changes in curriculum, degree programs and new initiatives including delivery mechanisms. Exchanges textbook information (price, availability, distribution, etc.) with academic departments each semester.
Remains informed of emerging trends and technologies and evaluates their application and impact on the University Store.

Marketing / Public Relations - 5%
Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing plan for the University store.
Maintain professional contacts outside the University through involvement in professional organizations. Serve on divisional and University committees. Maintain and create relationships with external entities including vendors/operations.

Student Experience and Engagement Leadership - 5%
Serve as one of 8 direct reports to the Vice President for Student Experience and Engagement.
Attend periodic direct reports meetings with the Vice President
Assist with strategic planning and implementation of university initiatives for the division of Student Experience and Engagement
Serve on Assessment team for the division of Student Experience and Engagement
Represent Student Experience and Engagement on university committees, initiatives, and programs as requested by Vice President.


Typical Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree with 5 years of management experience OR Master's degree with 3 years of management experience required.
Experience:
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience required.
  • Three (3) years budgeting experience required.
  • Demonstrated accounting knowledge required
  • Higher education experience preferred.
