Salary and Benefits
PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $120,000 per year to $130,000 per year.
This position is a Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position in the CSU and serves at the pleasure of the President.
The CSU enjoys a generous benefits program with employer paid life insurance ($100,000), as well as health, dental, and vision insurance with the monthly premium largely paid by the CSU. Additionally, we offer a broad range of other benefits which includes dependent and health care reimbursement accounts, tuition fee waiver, 401k, 457 and 403(b) plans. The CSU belongs to the CalPERS retirement plan in which medical and dental insurance continues in qualified retirement. The CSU has 14 paid holidays, one personal holiday and the position earns 24 days of vacation and 12 days of sick leave per year. This position may be eligible to participate in the Cal State East Bay hybrid telecommute program subject to management approval.

About the Position
The Director of Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) leads the development and management of Cal State East Bay’s mission-driven PACE portfolio, encompassing noncredit courses, donor, academic extension programs (special sessions), community education, and customized business training. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, the Director has a high level of autonomy and is responsible for strategic planning, operational oversight, fiscal management, and program innovation. This role ensures alignment with institutional priorities while addressing the evolving needs of students and the regional workforce through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Operational Management and Program Oversight:
- Oversee the lifecycle of professional and continuing education programs, from inception to implementation, including enrollment management and program assessment.
- Ensure that all programs align with accreditation standards, university policies, and compliance requirements.
- Lead partnerships with university colleges, academic departments, and administrative units to design and manage programs that support institutional growth and student success.
- Facilitate communication with academic and administrative leaders to ensure efficient program operation and alignment with institutional goals.
- Forge and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including professional associations and industry partners, to expand program reach and impact.
- Supervise a team of professionals and staff responsible for administrative support and program execution.
- Provide professional development opportunities to enhance team performance and adaptability.
- Manage recruitment and onboarding of personnel to meet the evolving needs of the PACE portfolio.
- Collaborate with university leadership on identifying new program opportunities and competitive market positioning.
- Utilize best practices and market trends to inform program development and improve enrollment strategies.
- Leverage technology and innovative approaches to expand program accessibility and delivery.
- Develop and oversee budgets for professional and continuing education programs, ensuring adherence to self-support financial guidelines.
- Monitor revenue and expenses, providing strategic recommendations to optimize resource allocation and program profitability.
- Work closely with fiscal teams to maintain transparency and accountability in all financial processes.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
- Seven (7+ years) of experience in professional and continuing education, higher education leadership, or program management.
- Demonstrated success in managing self-support programs, including budgeting, compliance, and operational oversight.
- Proven ability to lead teams and collaborate across diverse stakeholders within a university setting.
- Expertise in program management, including planning, execution, and assessment.
- Strong knowledge of budget planning and financial oversight for self-support programs.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships with internal and external partners.
- Proficiency in administrative systems, data analytics, and office software to drive informed decision-making.
- Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of program leadership and team management.
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment.
