Position Summary Information
Position Summary
Slippery Rock University has embarked on a strategic plan that will guide us to becoming a first-choice organization. That means being first-choice for students and first-choice for employees. In order to support that strategic plan, in addition to daily operations, the Office of Analytics and Decision Support ( ADS ) is looking for a professional to join us in promoting the wider and deeper use of data in institutional decision-making.
As an agile and detail-oriented business intelligence developer, this individual will play an important role on the ADS team. They will be a central part of maintaining a robust, self-service reporting portal, which currently has about 900 reports actively used by faculty, staff, and administrators. They will build, update, and manage BI assets with an eye on ease-of-use and multi-functionality. And they will bring an understanding of the data lifecycle to their daily work and design solutions to meet identified gaps in reporting and decision support.
As a creative problem-solver, this individual will tackle complex reporting challenges through report writing, data modeling, and recommendations on alternative data management practices. They will partner with stakeholders to understand their reporting needs and then translate that understanding into sophisticated solutions.
In a typical day, this individual will communicate with faculty and staff to understand their information needs, use database reporting tools (ex. IBM Cognos) to build or update reports, respond to ad hoc requests that come through the ticketing system, and work with the ADS team to troubleshoot data integrity issues as they arise. This individual will be working with data on students, employees, student finances, course schedules, and more, and they will be expected to treat confidential or sensitive data appropriately.
This is an on-campus role. Anticipated hiring range is $70k-80k, depending on qualifications. In addition, SRU provides a comprehensive package of employer benefits to eligible employees and their enrolled dependent(s), which include:
Medical, prescription drug, and supplemental benefits
Generous retirement plans, two options:
Alternative Retirement Plan ( ARP )
State Employees’ Retirement System ( SERS )
Tuition benefits for employees and dependents
Paid time off (holidays, sick leave, annual leave)
Employer-paid life insurance
Voluntary insurances and additional retirement programs
Minimum Qualifications
3-5 years of experience in querying databases, report-writing, or business intelligence
Experience with SQL (or other programming language), demonstrated
Bachelor’s degree
Successful completion of an on-campus interview, and background check
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with IBM Cognos suite, such as Report Writer, Cognos Analytics, Framework Manager, or Transformer
Experience meeting the needs of various clients or end-users
Experience working in institutional research, or a related function, at a 4-year college or university
