Pediatric Gastroenterology Triage Nurse

Job Summary

Job Summary
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Nurse to function as a member of the Pediatric Gastroenterology team at Primary Children's Hospital. The team consists of 9 RN's working with 6 NP's and 20 MD's. Responsible for delivering professional nursing care to patients via in-person, phone, or patient portal. Utilizes strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status; implements clinical nursing interventions to modify symptoms; develops, implements, and evaluates patient care plans and patient education materials to enhance and improve outcomes; and ensures a safe and therapeutic environment. 
 
This position is hybrid and requires an on-site presence ~3 days per week, dependent on clinical needs. Job location is expected to be primarily at the Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital Salt Lake City campus, but may also require a few days per month at the Intermountain Primary Children's Hospital Miller Campus located in Lehi, UT or Riverton, UT depending on clinical needs.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions ~85% FTE:
  1. Performs phone management with patients' parents, chart review, care coordination, triage, and problem management.
  2. Discusses patient and family concerns in person/over the phone and/or via the electronic health record.
  3. Provides and develops patient/family education materials surrounding common Gastroenterology disorders; communicates education best practices to proactively answer common questions to reduce future messages.
  4. Communicates adjustments in treatment plan to families.
  5. Formulates care plans for specific patients and documents the nursing process in patient's record.
  6. Evaluates patient response to interventions and modifies plan of care as needed to achieve health care goals. Communicates adjustments or changes in treatment plans to patient/family.
  7. Develops and participates in educating patients and their families about care programs.
  8. Communicates lab & other test results to families.
  9. Provides medication refills.
  10. Assists providers and staff with patient-related paperwork such as letters of medical necessity, DMV forms, school care plans, and preauthorization.
  11. Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
  12. Works closely with triage team and gastroenterology staff to provide high quality, efficient care to patients and their families.
  13. Keeps current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.
  14. Orients and educates new staff in nursing techniques and departmental procedures.
  15. Utilizes knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precaution, and initiates appropriate interventions in crisis situations.
  16. Participates in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes to improve care.


~0.15 FTE:
  1. Assists our Advanced Endoscopy Clinical Nurse Coordinator to move complex endoscopy patients along the care continuum.
  2. Communicates with the prior authorization team to ensure a seamless flow of patient care for pancreas or advanced endoscopy patients.
  3. Supports pancreas patients and other advanced endoscopy patients when the Advanced Endoscopy Clinical Nurse Coordinator is out of office.
The above responsibilities will be shared with other nurses and medical assistants in the Department. Incumbent will be expected to provide high quality patient care in an organization focused on patient safety, patient and parent satisfaction, and positive patient outcomes; advocates for patients and families to ensure unique needs are met; collaborates with highly skilled team members dedicated to achieving patient goals and providing world class care; actively participates in educational opportunities. Education in patient management is ongoing with the help of division practitioners and support staff. Minimum Qualifications
Required
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.
Preferred
Some positions may require additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within one year of hire.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
