Job Summary

The College of Computing & Informatics is seeking a Senior Academic Advisor who will advise current and prospective CCI graduate students regarding academic policy, procedure, and progress toward a degree. Advanced student service duties require broad experience, skill, and knowledge of established academic policies and procedures. The advisor supports students throughout their educational careers with a comprehensive approach to the student experience. Working in partnership with stakeholders throughout the university community, academic advisors are student advocates integral to student learning, growth, and development.

Essential Functions
  • Advise CCI current and prospective students; counsel on curriculum issues, academic progress, and other related matters; advise students on college and university regulations and refer them to appropriate university resources.
  • Manage transactional advising for graduate students (add/drop, adding minors, change of major, closed section overrides, graduation clearing, academic standing, etc.).
  • Run Hyperion reports to collect data on key information, such as registration, graduation applications, TPARs, etc.
  • Assist students with the registration process and resolve any problems they may encounter; maintain lines of communication with faculty, administration, and students.
  • Assist with student events and initiatives (i.e., New Student Orientation, Academic Advising Series, Student-Centered Workshops).
  • Manage active student files and maintain inactive and archive files. Track over-enrolled and under-enrolled classes to assist and advise in student registration.
  • Pre-clear candidates for graduation, ensuring all degree requirements are met.
  • Ensure accurate information in communications to students and faculty in an effective and timely manner.
  • Collect and prepare all documentation for Academic Standing Committees quarterly.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Graduate Advising, manage escalated student issues.
  • Pull data for and manage course waivers and Data Science quizzes, resulting in waivers for incoming and current students.
  • Plan and host graduate orientations for incoming students during two admit terms.
  • Develop and implement the Graduate Tutoring Resource Center with various CCI and university departments and organizations.
  • Attend student recruitment and retention events. This includes evening and weekend work.
  • Other specific projects/duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience advising, counseling or higher education.
Other requirements:
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to be proactive, recognize problems, and offer solutions.
  • Great customer service skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to handle confidential matters.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to complete projects and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with PCs and related software.

Additional Information

This position is classified as exempt, Grade J. Compensation for this grade ranges from $47,490 to $71,230 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
