Job Description:

Washington and Lee University (W&L) is seeking a Director of Lifelong Learning to lead, innovate, and expand its Lifelong Learning Programs as opportunities emerge. Reporting to the Executive Director of Alumni and Career Services, within University Advancement, this position oversees a dynamic portfolio of campus, travel, and virtual programs designed to engage alumni, parents, and the broader university community. As a thought leader, the Director explores potential lifelong learning programs and adjusts current programs as needed in coordination with campus departments and Lifelong Learning staff. Drawing upon university resources, Lifelong Learning serves as a vital driver of alumni engagement and alumni relations for the university and helps fulfill W&L's mission of educating students to be lifelong learners.

Essential Functions:
- Serve as a member of the Executive Director of Alumni and
Career Services' leadership team.
- Lead and supervise the Office of Lifelong Learning Programs
staff, including the coordination of workflow, individual
responsibilities, and personnel matters such as hiring and
performance evaluations.
- Manage office and individual program budgetary
accounts.
- Focus regularly on strategic planning for Lifelong Learning by
benchmarking peer programs; documenting and evaluating office
processes; collecting and analyzing program data; keeping current
on research related to how lifelong learning is best offered; and
formulating program enhancements to increase participation and
engagement and to reach expanded and different audiences each
year.
- Develop broad personal relationships with department chairs,
academic leaders, and faculty which can inform and build trust with
Lifelong Learning objectives and programs.
- Oversee development of topics, programs, and faculty
participation in Lifelong Learning Summer Explorations and Weekend
seminars.
- Manage with staff the destinations, itineraries, faculty
experts, hosts, and contracts for the Travel Program.
- Manage staff development of Lifelong Learning Virtual Programs
including the After Class podcasts, At Home Webinars, W&L Book
Club, and other emerging virtual opportunities to reach and sustain
a broad group.
- Oversee Lifelong Learning collaborations and engagements with
partners including special opportunities for lifelong learning
programs during campus alumni and parent events; identification of
faculty and topics of interest/expertise for selected chapter
programs under the branding of Lifelong Learning; and opportunities
for Lifelong Learning to partner with academic centers such as the
Roger Mudd Center and the Ted Delaney Center to co-sponsor programs
in line with the mission of Lifelong Learning.
- Collaborate with Alumni and Career Services' Operations and
Marketing team to deploy marketing campaigns and materials for
Lifelong Learning programs. Embrace responsibility for the writing
and design of the primary written marketing pieces, including the
annual comprehensive catalog. Regularly analyze the production
benefits and enhance materials and modes of transmitting. Work
closely with the Associate Director of Operations and Marketing's
team to create appealing web content and brochures and contribute
ideas for Lifelong Learning's social media marketing
campaigns.
- Serve as a member of the Alumni Board's Lifelong Learning
Committee to seek guidance and feedback on current and potential
programs.
- Lead a new Lifelong Learning Faculty Advisory Committee to help
staff identify faculty, topics, and programmatic outlines for
Lifelong Learning programs.
- Prepare annual report for University Advancement.
- Represent W&L at appropriate professional
conferences.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree and minimum 7 years of relevant work
experience in a higher education setting such as Advancement,
academic administration, or program development. An advanced degree
at least at the master's level is preferred as is broad exposure to
the liberal arts.
- Personal characteristics including intellectual curiosity; a
commitment to lifelong learning; creativity; the ability to
analyze, adapt and innovate; strong active listening skills; and
the ability to interact effectively with a variety of individuals
including alumni, parents, friends of the university, faculty,
administration, and staff.
- Proven ability to write clearly and persuasively.
- Experience creating and managing a departmental budget and
producing and analyzing results within revenue and expense
expectations.
- Experience managing a staff, setting an example to others,
inspiring cooperative and collegial work, and creating a positive
work environment.
- A love of learning and a strong commitment to continuing
education opportunities.
- Ability to travel required to cover programming and occasional
off-campus events.
