Assistant Professor – Coordinator of Composition
Tenure Track – Academic Year 2025 - 2026
Western Connecticut State University’s Macricostas School of Arts & Sciences is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Composition position in the Department of World Languages & Composition. This successful applicant also will serve as Coordinator of Composition.
WCSU is committed to enhancing our diverse university community by actively encouraging people with disabilities, members of LGBTQIA and BIPOC communities, veterans, and women to apply. We take pride in our pluralistic community and continue to seek excellence through diversity and inclusion. WCSU is honored to be awarded the federal designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). This accomplishment marks a pivotal moment in our progress toward fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within our campus community.
The Macricostas School of Arts & Sciences is home to 10 departments, 17 undergraduate majors and four (4) graduate majors, and offers a variety of ways for students to further their education; the composition program is housed in the Department of World Languages and Composition. The Composition Program at WCSU seeks to enhance and refine students’ abilities to read, write, think, and research critically so they may become more confident, capable college-level writers and researchers for communities within and beyond the university. We emphasize writing skills that draw on critical reading and thinking to enable students to analyze multiple points of view, define and support their own positions on various issues, and make purposeful decisions in their writing for diverse audiences and purposes. Students learn to be critical readers through analyzing and evaluating culturally diverse texts. We emphasize writing as a recursive process and an intentional rhetorical act. Students produce multiple drafts of their projects and learn to analyze their own and others’ writing. Our program outcomes are adapted from The Council of Writing Program Administrators’ (CWPA) “Outcomes Statement for First-Year Composition” (2008) and the “Framework For Success in Postsecondary Writing” (2011), jointly developed by CWPA, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the National Writing Project. Information on the department and program may be found at: www.wcsu.edu/wlc/
Position Summary: The successful candidate will teach in and oversee the university's Composition program: initiating and recommending changes to the curriculum as needed, coordinating assessment of the program, coordinating writing placement, and providing professional development workshops and support to Composition faculty. Although full-time faculty members carry a four-four teaching load, the Coordinator of Composition will teach three courses and work one-quarter time overseeing the composition program. Professors are expected to maintain an active research program, serve on committees, and advise students.

Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in faculty development and/or in writing program administration and assessment. A dissertation and/or publications on college writing specifically are desirable. A candidate who does not meet the above standards may also be appointed provided the candidate has credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above experience.
WCSU is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from different backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for first-generation and under-represented groups.
