JOB SUMMARY:
Support microbiological research on polymicrobial biofilms and interkingdom interactions. Assist in experimental design, perform microbiological assays, and analyze data under the guidance of senior lab members. The role will focus on investigating microbial interactions, particularly between Aspergillus fumigatus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, using advanced techniques such as single-cell RNA sequencing and microscopy.
JOB DUTIES:
40% - Essential - Document data, calibrating equipment, and adhering to operating procedures to ensure quality control in the research lab. Respond to any queries or concerns that may come up during the testing process, avoiding mistakes, and simply and succinctly convey complicated technical knowledge. Highly important to effectively report and discuss all analysis results and methodologies between lab staff and principal investigator.
30% - Essential - Data Preprocessing:
Collaborate closely with a PhD student to assist in the preparation and organization of molecular biology datasets. Organize and clean data, performing basic quality checks to ensure accuracy, and normalizing datasets to prepare them for downstream analysis. Help label and document datasets clearly, maintain organized records, and create simple visualizations, such as charts or plots, to summarize data trends. Utilize excel and other accessible software to manage and process data effectively. Contribute confidently to research tasks. Regular communication with the PhD student will ensure tasks are well-coordinated and any challenges are addressed promptly. 30% - Essential - Routine Microbiological Assays and Archiving:
Perform routine culturing, maintenance, and storage of bacterial and fungal strains. Prepare and sterilize media, reagents, and equipment for experiments. Conduct microbiological assays, including growth curve analysis, biofilm formation studies, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Isolate and characterize microbes from environmental or clinical samples.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education - High School or Equivalent and work experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting, in a health care setting or in a general maintenance or machine shop environment. A bachelor's degree in a related scientific discipline may be substituted for the required work experience.

Education - Master's Degree - in Biology, Microbiology or related fields
Work Experience 1+ years in a microbiology laboratory

COMPENSATION INFORMATION
Expected Salary Range: $14.94 - $19.00/hour
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL
Normal Operations
Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
