Position Description Summary/Purpose :

The full-time (12-month) Assistant Director - Student Support Services will report to the SSS Project Director. The Assistant Director - Student Support Services will assist the Project Director in managing the UB Student Support Services (SSS) Program but will primarily work with students (providing one-on-one advising for approximately 60% of the total SSS participant population of 140 students) to support their academic progress.

Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities :

  • Work closely with the SSS Program Director to provide administrative support for all aspects of the Student Support Services (SSS) Program
  • Provide referrals and connections to additional services available on campus to assist students with non-academic issues interfering with persistence
  • Provide assistance with navigating the University system
  • Model/instruct students in how to communicate with faculty
  • Coordinate and facilitate workshops on study skills and related topics
  • Maintain and conduct regular schedule of counseling, registration and student educational plan appointments with SSS eligible students
  • Provide feedback to the Director concerning student needs and outcomes
  • Assist the Director in the compilation, documentation, and submission of all required reports
  • Assist in coordinating professional tutoring and supplemental instruction, supervise and coordinate the Peer Coach Program
  • Perform additional functions as determined by the Director in support of the SSS grant
Other Functions :
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
  • Continues professional development and training; keeps current with trends.
  • Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill :
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing and fostering best practices and policies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and build an environment in which all members of the University community are treated with respect and dignity.
  • Knowledge of the issues related to academically at-risk students, especially those who are first-generation, disabled, and/or low income; knowledge of career, employment, academic, and personal counseling; basic technological literacy: proficiency with internet research, and common word processing, spreadsheet and database programs; good communication skills.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications :

Education, Training and Experience :
  • Degree Level Bachelor Required / Master Preferred
  • Experience 1-3 yrs.
  • Master’s degree in counseling preferred, Higher Education Administration, Education, or related field required.
  • Minimum of two years’ relevant experience in a higher education environment, including advising, career counseling, teaching or personal counseling experience
  • Experience with or participation in SSS or similar program preferred; experience working with a diverse population of students preferred.
  • This position works on a twelve-month position, renewable annually, contingent upon grant funding, satisfactory annual performance evaluation and meeting grant objectives.
  • Evening and weekend work is required for special events and programming. This position requires a valid driver’s license and driving record which complies with University of Bridgeport
  • Conducts all work in a safe manner and all work safety practices are followed.
