Duties & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Employer Development Manager within VCU Career Services participates in and assists with developing and executing strategic initiatives for the employer and experiential engagement team. Responsibilities include employer outreach strategy, employer segmentation and development, mechanisms for employer and alumni involvement on campus, coordination with campus offices, on campus interviewing and other employer-focused programs. Additional duties of the Employer Development Manager include, but are not limited to assisting in developing and leading on-campus recruitment planning with particular emphasis on student-employer engagement; collecting evaluation, outcome measurement, and recruitment statistics and data; stewarding relationships with employers to increase recruiting opportunities and outcomes for students; assisting in efforts to maintain campus recruiting policies for students, employers, faculty and staff in accordance with professional standards. This role reports directly to the Associate Director, Employer and Experiential Development.
Members of the VCU Career Services team regularly engage in professional development, including in-house and external training and conference opportunities, to make sure we are able to best serve students and alumni, to stay current with industry standards and changes, to revise programs and services to reflect trends, and to increase our office’s visibility, both at VCU and on a broader scale.

Core Responsibilities:

Relationship Development and Management (35%):
  • Coordinate and implement outreach to new and prospective employer partners who may have an interest in recruiting and retaining new hires for internship, part-time, or full-time roles.
  • Steward existing employers through the recruitment lifecycle including in-person, electronic, and phone communication in alignment with campus recruiting guidelines, and respond to external party inquiries regarding experiential and employment opportunities that might be a fit for VCU students.
  • Orient employer partners to VCU, VCU Career Services, and our Handshake system so they can make informed decisions about engagement and be prepared to effectively post and follow up on experiential and employment opportunities, actively promoting on-campus and virtual recruitment of students.
  • Assist employers in building their presence (brand) on campus, advising them on recruitment strategies and setting expectations about number of student applicants per job posting(s), event participation and student involvement; ensure adequate and creative marketing of employer postings and events.
  • Work with employer partners to strengthen recruitment pipelines and identify additional recruitment opportunities, checking in regularly to ensure high-quality services and continued campus engagement.
  • Evaluate employer needs and identify corresponding services that may be provided by VCU Career Services and various campus partners.
  • Provide outstanding customer service in accordance with team standards to both internal and external customers by considering how actions or plans will affect partners; follow through on responsibilities to partners. Responds with appropriate urgency, flexibility, courtesy, and good judgment to meet customer needs and resolve problems.
  • Communicate employer feedback about the career and internship readiness of VCU students and industry recruiting trends to VCU Career Services.
  • Participate in various campus events involving prospective students, alumni, and families to engage those stakeholders in our services and programs.
  • Serve as VCU Career Services liaison to designated academic departments and university departments.
  • Serve on relevant committees and industry program groups within or representing VCU Career Services, SEMSS, and VCU at large.
Program Development and Management (25%):
  • Lead, organize, and implement annual career and internship fairs. This includes, but is not limited to, employer invitations, registration, day-of-fair logistics, and communications regarding career fairs. Work with SEMSS Communications, utilizing appropriate processes so that event marketing can be created and distributed to employers and students as appropriate. Assist employers on the day of their visit with any needs (parking passes, scheduling issues, etc.), and follow up with employers after their visit as necessary.
  • Work with key stakeholders to create career/industry and employment-specific events and workshops that facilitate student learning, networking and mentorship, and skill development.
  • Collaborate with VCS staff, student employees, and other campus units on projects and programs that facilitate student learning and skill development.
  • Collaborate and communicate with VCS team members, campus partners, employers, and alumni to ensure successful event design, marketing, staffing, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Serve as note taker and co-host (supporting Associate Director) for meetings and events of the Employer Advisory Board.
  • Participate in relevant professional associations at the state, regional, and/or national level to influence employer and experiential development-related policies, deliver presentations, and share the work of VCU Career Services in this important realm, inspiring other institutions and employers to engage in similar work.
Leadership and Strategic Initiatives (25%):
  • This position may supervise any combination of part-time professional staff, graduate student intern and undergraduate student staff to support program delivery and team expansion.
  • Serve as strategic lead for the VCS Employer Partner Program, proactively generating revenue for the office and its services.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director to facilitate post-graduate outcomes collection through Handshake’s First Destination Survey module, coordinating with VCU Alumni to randomly select prize drawing winners and communicate VCS support available to graduates who still need assistance.
  • Provide leadership for, coordination of, or assistance with other special programs and projects for VCU Career Services.
  • Serve on cross-functional teams to promote the vision and direction of VCU Career Services; contribute to the development, adaptation, and implementation of the VCU Career Services Strategic Plan in order to evolve career related services and programs.
  • Implement, review, and enforce campus recruiting guidelines in conjunction with the Employer and Experiential Development Team.
  • Perform other duties to support team operations and strategic plan, as assigned.
  • Adhere to principles of professional conduct and ethics as outlined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), including but not limited to:
  1. Engage with employer partners to promote equitable pay/wages, inclusive recruitment and hiring practices, mentoring and management, and professional development.
  2. Implement, review and enforce employer recruitment policies.
  3. Providing resources for all those engaged in career advising and recruitment to promote informed and responsible decision making.


Technology Management (10%):
  • Serve as co-administrator for Handshake (a vendor-supported career services management product), troubleshooting inquiries and assisting with the training of employers, students, staff, and faculty on the use of Handshake in a confident manner.
  • Promote effective office, employer, and campus engagement with Handshake in support of student recruitment, retention, experiential learning, networking, and event participation, as well as organizational relationship management and documentation.
  • Communicate with employers regarding the use of our online database (Handshake), and provide service as necessary to recruiters with navigating the system, posting opportunities, and managing applicants.
  • Support accurate and timely entry of data, employer and posting approvals, troubleshooting, and communications with employers in the Handshake system, as needed, in collaboration with the Employer and Experiential Development team.
  • Create and schedule monthly new employer emails in Handshake, as well as coordinating and scheduling quarterly employer newsletters from all three Career Services teams.
  • Serve as back-up manager of the hirevcurams@vcu.edu email inbox when EED Coordinator and/or Graduate Intern is out of the office.
Assessment and Reporting (5%):
  • Contribute to the monthly, quarterly, and annual assessment and analytics projects related to the metrics tied to the unit strategic plan and additional data needs of the Associate Director and Director.
  • During post-graduate outcomes data collection window through Handshake’s First Destination Survey module annually, track response rates on bi-weekly to monthly basis and provide comparatives to prior year tracking.
Qualifications

Minimum Hiring Standards:
  • Bachelor’s degree, with emphasis on student affairs, higher education, business, human resources, social sciences, or related field or equivalent combination of experience, training, and education.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships, partnerships, and alliances with companies, nonprofit and government organizations, and/or other external stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally in the office environment and to interface with students, alumni, faculty, donors, and university administrators.
  • Exceptional communication skills (written, oral, presentation).
  • Ability to assess and report on departmental metrics and program outcomes and respond to data inquiries from campus partners.
  • Ability to organize and effectively manage multiple priorities, programs, and projects.
  • Ability to use relevant database systems (e.g. Handshake, Navigate, Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets).
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in progress or completed with emphasis on student affairs, higher education, business, human resources, social sciences, or related field.
  • Experience working in a career services, or similar student support, office. Internship or Graduate Assistant positions can be considered
  • Experience using database systems, e.g. Handshake, GradLeaders,CSO, Symplicity, SalesForce, PeopleSoft, etc.
  • Awareness of trends within higher education, career services, employment marketplace and economy.
  • Experience supervising part-time, full-time, or student staff members.
  • Program assessment and evaluation experience.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with up to 40% weekly telework.
