Position Summary:
The Arkansas State University Department of Biological Sciences welcomes applications for an Assistant Professor in Environmental Biology to teach courses in Biology and Environmental Sciences. This new faculty member will join a department dedicated to Biology education through the use of active and innovative teaching methods. This position is a 9-month, non-tenure track position, instructionally focused appointment (80% teaching, 20% service) with potential for promotion. This position begins August 15, 2025.
Arkansas State University is a comprehensive, state-supported, doctoral university with high research activity (R2). Faculty members in the Department of Biological Sciences engage in research and interact with the nearly 500 undergraduate and 60 graduate students across Biology, Environmental Sciences, and Molecular Biosciences graduate programs. Jonesboro is a community of nearly 80,000 people located in Northeast Arkansas, amidst the Mississippi Alluvial Plain and Crowley’s Ridge ecoregions. We are an hour away from Memphis, Tennessee, and the Ozark Highlands. Jonesboro boasts a regional center for quality healthcare, a variety of dining and entertainment options, a low cost of living, and plenty of recreational opportunities.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Instruction of 12 credit hours/semester (combination of lectures and labs).
- Courses for which this faculty member may be responsible include Principles of Ecology, Global Change Biology, Environmental Biology, People and the Environment, Biology of Plants (Intro Course), Invertebrate Zoology, Conservation Biology, Dendrology, and Plant Systematics.
- Most of these courses will consist mainly of undergraduate students, but some are dual-listed as graduate courses.
- In addition to formal course responsibilities, the successful candidate can be involved in mentoring undergraduate research projects (including honor’s theses).
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
The successful candidate will have experience and be passionate about teaching undergraduate courses using modern methodologies (e.g. project-based learning). They will join a department with faculty excited about science instruction and currently conducting research in many topics, including molecular and cellular biology, microbiology, organismal biology, human health, ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. Faculty also have access to the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning which provides professional development opportunities.
