Description

The pharmacy technician at the University Health Center is a key member of our team. They are responsible for dispensing prescribed medications to health center patients, utilizing a formulary of approximately 50 medications and over the counter items, under the direction of an off-site attending physician. The technician is responsible for pharmacy and medical supply inventory management. They support grant funded projects and ensure compliance with those pharmacy regulations, including the sexually transmitted infection (STI) 340B discount program, the Title X sexual and reproductive health program, and the emergency contraception program, and manage medications for these programs.

Examples of Duties

Dispense prescribed medications to health center patients under the direction of off-site attending physician: 60%

  • Utilizes expertise and knowledge to select proper medication as indicated by the prescribing provider.

  • Clarifies any questions about the order with the prescribing provider before dispensing the medication to the patient.

  • Checks patient drug allergies and duplications.

  • Provides patient education and assistance as needed to ensure client understanding and compliance with the prescribed medication regimen.

  • Answers questions and assists patients in selecting over the counter products.

  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations, privacy notice and other federal and state regulations.

  • Completes continuing education and maintains license and certification.

Manages pharmacy, vaccine and medical supply inventory: 20%
  • Follows UCM Procurement policies and procedures, adapt dispensary protocol as needed when UCM procurement policies are updated.

  • Ensures adequate supply of pharmacy and medical supplies are on hand by checking prices, placing orders in a timely manner, and tracking inventory using multiple computerized web-based ordering systems.

  • Receives, checks, and verifies orders and pricing.

  • Regularly and systematically checks stock for medication expiration dates; prepares returns of outdates when necessary.

  • When new products or programs are being considered for the formulary, research options for purchasing, collaborate with UHC clinical director and administrative staff to develop protocol for ordering and dispensing, and communicate finalized process to UHC team.
  • Prepares the yearly dispensary inventory.
  • Ensures any drug recalls and appropriate paperwork is completed.
Special projects: 20%
  • Ensures compliance with pharmacy regulations for grant funded initiatives including the sexually transmitted infection (STI) 340B discount program, the Title X sexual and reproductive health program, and the emergency contraception program.
  • Manages supplies for these programs, including preparing insertion and removal kits, bags to distribute barrier methods and emergency contraception.
  • In collaboration with Health Center staff, develop strategies to inform clinic patients about available programs and resources.
  • Maintains and tracks the pharmaceutical and hazardous waste for the Health Center.

Typical Qualifications

Education :
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
  • Two (2) years prior experience as pharmacy technician.
Supplemental Information
  • National Certification through National Health Career Association (NHA) or Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) required.
  • Missouri Pharmacy Technician license required.
  • Must maintain license and certification
