PURPOSE

The Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) is inviting applications for a research scientist to advance the state of the art in environmental data quality methods including Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches for coastal water level observations in a robust and time efficient way. This position offers the opportunity to work with a dynamic team of scientists and researchers in a collaborative environment. This position is contingent on extramural funding. The position will be 75% effort for two years and could be extended contingent on available funding including funding generated by the research scientist.

The Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science (CBI) at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi is a collaborative research environment utilizing geospatial science to support data driven decision making. The institute's research laboratories develop innovative solutions informed by precise measurements honoring the legacy of the Blucher family and their commitment to surveying and science. CBI pushes the boundaries of geospatial science by applying cutting edge technologies to map, measure, collect and manage big data used to predict our physical environment.

DESCRIPTION

Development of Coastal Data Quality Algorithms Including New AI Based Methods: 34%
  • Review existing methods and standards for coastal data quality methods.
  • Develop, test, and demonstrate coastal data quality approaches to quality control of water level observations collected by tide gauges.
  • Develop new methods, including using AI, for bad data detection, gap filling, assessing, and documenting performance of the new methods.


Programming, Documentation, and Collaboration: 33%
  • Create well-documented code to form the basis for future operational models for the new Lighthouse software and for the broader environmental community with a particular focus on the Texas coast.


Teamwork, Collaboration, and Dissemination of Research Results: 33%
  • Development and submission of proposals for new funded research.
  • Draft articles describing new methods for publication in peer reviewed journals.
  • Collaborate with other Conrad Blucher Institute scientists and students on the development of data quality algorithms and IT team for the coding of protype algorithms.
  • Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. in oceanography, coastal oceanography, or closely related field.
  • Six years of related work experience.
  • Experience working with artificial intelligence.
  • Experience writing, submitting, and editing peer reviewed publications.
  • Expertise in developing computer science software.
  • Strong demonstrated programming skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and deliver results in a timely manner.
  • Assess and prioritize multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced office environment, meeting deadlines and project requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent project management and organization skills.
  • Experienced in workflow design and technical documentation.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ten or more years of related work experience.
  • Experience working with coastal data and developing coastal models including working time series.


SALARY: $5,833.34 - $6,250.00 Monthly ($70,000.00 - $75,000.00 Annual, Approximately)
  • NOTE: This position is grant-funded. The position will be 75% effort for two years and could be extended contingent on available funding including funding generated by the research scientist.
