Job Description:
Summary:
The Center Operations Assistant will assist with all aspects of planning, managing, and executing the Public Affairs and Advocation Institute. This position requires frequent interaction with students, professional guest lecturers, and other university faculty and staff. This position will report to the Director of the Public Affairs and Advocacy Institute and will coordinate and collaborate with the Program Coordinator for the Center for Congressional and Presidential studies.
The Public Affairs and Advocacy Institute (PAAI) is a biannual, two-week intensive course that teaches best practices for developing and executing issue advocacy campaigns and features over 25 professional speakers from across the lobbying, policy, and communications spectrum. Through the Institute, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students participate in a case study exercise to apply theory to practice and engage in professional development. PAAI is a signature institute within the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with identifying and inviting professional guest
lecturers to participate in the Institute, a well as providing
operations and support services, like coordinate requisite
university paperwork and presentation support.
- Coordinate with the Director and Program Coordinator on
non-degree, professional student enrollment.
- Collaborate with the Director and course mentors to develop and
share resources with students.
- Manage catering for the two-week institutes.
- Provide in-person operations support during the
Institutes.
- Assist with promoting and marketing the Institute through
university channels, LinkedIn, and others.
- Other duties as assigned.
- $17.50 - $18.50 per hour
- Approximately 5-10 hours per week.
- Weekly hours fluctuate depending on the time of the semester
and are flexible based on personal schedules, except for about one
weekly hour-long call with the Director during standard business
hours.
- During the Institutes (ex. January 2-11, 2025 and May 12-24,
2025) full time presence is required.
- Hours during the Institute are approximately 8:30 AM to 5:00
PM.
- This position is mostly remote; except it will require
in-person work on AU’s main campus during the Institutes.
- Current AU undergraduate student.
- Experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Word and
PowerPoint.
- Current AU graduate student with interest in advocacy and
lobbying.
- Curiosity and experience with social media platforms, mainly
LinkedIn.
- Curiosity and experience with marketing and promoting the
Institute.
- Experience managing and posting to Canvas.
- This position is available only to enrolled American University
