Description

The Dean is responsible for the leadership and management of all academic programs, human resources, budget, facilities, equipment, and students in the College of Education. The Dean reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as a member of the Provost Council.

About the College of Education
The College of Education is organized into five academic departments , the Clinical Services and Certification office , the Central Regional Professional Service Center , and one auxiliary unit designed to serve the needs of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities ( THRIVE program ). The college is composed of approximately 70 full-time faculty and staff with an annual budget of approximately $8.3 million. In the Fall 2024 semester, the college enrolled 673 undergraduate and 1,047 graduate students across 5 undergraduate and 19 graduate degree programs. Additional certificate and minors are available, as well. Several programs in the college hold specialized accreditation .

Examples of Duties

College leadership - 40%
  • Addresses college challenges and provides effective management of existing resources and operations
  • Provides leadership for strategic planning in the college in alignment with university strategic planning efforts
  • Supports curriculum development and specialized accreditation activities within the college
  • Secures and provides necessary resources to meet college mission and goals
  • Conducts well-organized, results-oriented meetings
  • Develops academic leadership skills in all direct reports
  • Engages external stakeholders in the efforts of the college and works with Alumni/Foundation staff to develop and raise private funds for the college
Human resource management- 20%
  • Builds the college leadership team and maintains a collegial cooperative environment
  • Develops and maintains the annual college staffing plan with the Director for Academic Affairs Operations
  • Oversees annual promotion, tenure, academic leave, and faculty evaluation processes within the college
  • Communicates in a professional manner with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Keepscolleaguesinformedaboutissues,decision,andpoliciesrelatedtothecollege
  • Encourages others to express their professional opinions
  • Creates an environment where colleagues are comfortable approaching the dean with concerns

Financial, Facilities,and Inventory Management - 30%
  • Works closely with budget staff to manage college resources
  • Assures effective use of college resources
  • Leads college academic facilities construction and renovation efforts
  • Maintains accurate records and oversight of college budgets and inventory

Professional development - 10%
Encourages and supports the professional development of faculty members and staff
Engages in activities to enhance one’s own professional development annually

Typical Qualifications

Education:
  • Terminal degree in field represented within the college required.
Experience:
  • Associate Professor or Professor with tenure in an academic discipline in the college required
  • Five years’ university experience as a department chair or higher required
  • Experience managing grant-funded and revenue-based support units preferred
  • Experience raising private gifts preferred
  • Experience leading academic facilities construction and renovation projects preferred
  • Experience leading online and hybrid programs preferred
  • University or specialized accreditation experience preferred
