Basic Functions
Essential Functions of Position
Provide quality instructions, create and maintain an environment which emphasizes teaching and learning and encourages free discussion of ideas, interests and issues. Primary duties of adjunct faculty members are related to curriculum and teaching. Provide integrated English language acquisition, English literacy, EL civics education, and College and Career Readiness skills instruction to students in noncredit English as a Second Language courses in accordance with course outlines, semester schedule and college mission which may include multilevel, day, evening, and weekend courses.
Plan lessons and prepare instructional materials including syllabus Prepare and conduct student assessments Apply classroom instruction to real-life contexts Utilize technology as part of classroom instruction to help develop language and digital literacy skills critical to successfully attaining employment and educational opportunities Monitor student progress and modify approaches as needed for effectiveness
The starting noncredit adjunct rate from salary table 25 is $73.59 per hour-Lecture and $55.20 per hour-Lab. If you have an advanced degree, the rate is $76.73 per hour-Lecture and $57.54 per hour-Lab.

Education and Experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.
Bachelor's degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages OR Bachelor's degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech; AND a certificate in teaching English as a second language (TESOL), which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor OR Bachelor's degree with any of the majors specified in subparagraph (2) above; AND one year of experience teaching English as a second language in an accredited institution; AND a certificate in teaching English as a second language (TESOL), which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor OR Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in English as a second language. For a noncredit course in citizenship, a bachelor's degree in any discipline, and six semester units in American history and institutions.
Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required material.
Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, culture, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
If the title of your degree as stated on your transcripts DOES NOT EXACTLY MATCH one of the degree titles listed in the minimum qualifications listed above, you must request an equivalency review and submit conclusive supporting documents at the time of application. Selection Procedure:
The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. A teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants. After the initial interviews have been conducted, the committee will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent/President for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and authorization to hire. Candidates will participate primarily in remote interviews and in some instances final interviews may be conducted in person while observing all health and safety protocols as approved by the Santa Barbara County Health Department.
