CONTROLLER
The University of Medicine and Health Science (UMHS) is seeking a medical school Controller.
UMHS is a fully accredited International Medical School with a campus in St. Kitts and Maine with affiliations with over 26 major teaching hospitals located in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Our administrative office which contains the finance department is in NYC.
UMHS is a small boutique medical school providing a personalized education to qualified applicants. We maintain the highest of academic standards to ensure that our students receive the best education possible. We are fully dedicated to our students success and proud that in 2024 over 92% of our first time applicants obtained a residency. Our accreditor, ACCM, has adopted the US standards of accreditation and is recognized by the US Department of Education. In addition to our accreditation, we also have multiple state approvals.
The Controller is a senior financial professional responsible for overseeing all aspects of the institution's financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance, ensuring accurate financial records and the responsible management of funds within the medical school's guidelines and regulations. This position will be located at our administrative office in NY.
Key responsibilities of the medical school controller will include:
- Financial Planning and Budgeting: Develop and manage the medical school's annual operating budget, including revenue projections, expense forecasts, and capital expenditure plans. Monitor budget performance against actual expenditures, identifying variances and taking corrective actions.
- Collaborate with department heads and program directors to develop departmental budgets aligned with strategic goals.
Accounting and Financial Reporting: Oversee all accounting functions, ensuring accurate and timely recording of financial transactions. Prepare comprehensive financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, adhering to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Conduct account reconciliations and ensure the integrity of financial data.
- Internal Controls and Compliance: Establish and maintain robust internal control systems to safeguard assets and prevent fraud. Monitor compliance with all applicable federal, state, and institutional financial regulations, including HIPAA and FERPA.
- Conduct regular internal audits to identify areas for improvement and mitigate risks.
- Financial Analysis and Reporting: Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and potential areas for cost savings. Prepare detailed financial reports for senior management, the Board of Trustees, and other stakeholders.
- Provide insightful financial analysis to support strategic decision-making.

Maintaining the university's accounting and financial reporting systems, and ensuring the integrity and security of financial data
Contractual obligations
- Reviewing and analyzing contractual obligations to ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures
Required skills and qualifications for a medical school controller:
Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license Extensive experience in healthcare accounting, preferably within a medical school or university setting Strong understanding of GAAP and healthcare regulations Advanced financial analysis and reporting skills Excellent leadership and communication abilities
- Proficiency in financial management software and systems
