We are seeking a Payroll Analyst I who will be responsible for the analytical, statistical and accounting functions of Payroll Shared Services. This position applies a comprehensive understanding of payroll regulations, accounting practices and data processing applications to ensure the accuracy and completeness of payroll financial data. It requires a demonstrated ability to identify and extract critical data elements for analysis and subsequent reporting to demonstrate compliance with internal and external policy and regulations. This position works in collaboration with internal users of SAP payroll data explaining accounting transactions, providing additional data when needed and resolving any issues and discrepancies that may exist.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical reviews and reconciliations.
  • Prepare account analysis, accounting entries and financial reports to ensure payroll information is accurately posted to the financial ledgers.
  • Provide financial reporting support to departments; prepare complex FLSA data analysis to ensure SAP pay calculations are accurate and in compliance with federal regulations; perform periodic internal audit and analysis of payroll processes and provide supporting statistics.
  • Collaborate with staff and/or management in the development, testing and documentation of revisions to existing procedures and implementation of new processes.
  • Oversee the collection and setup of international health system employees in SAP to ensure proper processing and withholding of payroll taxes and I9 compliance.
  • Respond to email and phone inquiries.
  • Provide payroll processing and backup assistance for the weekly, bi-weekly and semimonthly payrolls.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • Two years related experience.
  • If the Bachelor’s Degree is in an unrelated field, three years of progressively responsible experience is required.
  • Additional education may substitute for the required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula (18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience).


Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to develop financial analysis and reporting, identify and resolve problems during payroll processing, work well under pressure and meet deadlines, handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Be knowledgeable of current rules and regulations pertinent to payroll, retirement and benefits and given the nature of the data, maintain confidentiality.
  • Have an aptitude for numbers and math and an extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Excel and Word.
  • Be able to work independently and with others, have excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Should be able to occasionally provide direction for payroll staff and part-time student help.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
