Position Summary:

The Department of Physiology & Biophysics is in search of a Research scientist to join Dr. Qinglian Liu’s lab. The Research Scientist will study the function and mechanisms of Hsp70/Hsp110 molecular chaperones in maintaining cellular protein health and their applications in the development of novel anti-fungal drugs, especially in the areas of biochemical, structural, and genetic analysis of Hsp110 molecular chaperones from fungi and humans. To study these, we utilize a multi-disciplinary approach combining biochemical and biophysical analyses, structural characterization (both X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM), and fungal biology and genetics including anti-fungal tests. We offer an intellectual, collaborative, and multidisciplinary research environment to support career goals and provide access to modern facilities. Candidates with background knowledge and hands-on experience in biochemistry, structural biology, molecular biology, fungal biology, and other relevant fields. Skills in studying Hsp70/Hsp110 molecular chaperones are particularly welcome.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Design and perform experiments. Analyze, interpret and discuss experimental data with PI
  • Write first drafts of manuscripts

Qualifications

Minimum Hiring Standards:
  • Strong research background in Hsp70/Hsp110 molecular chaperones, biochemistry, structural biology, fungal biology and genetics (especially in development of novel antifungal drugs), and molecular biology
  • Evidence of successful completion of a research project (publications). Strong track record in research areas on biochemical, structural, genetic, and fungal research related to molecular chaperones
  • Ability to work independently; interpret, present, and discuss experimental data
  • Excellent communications skills
  • This will be a minimum one-year appointment, contingent upon satisfactory annual reviews
  • Salary is commensurate with NIH guidelines and applicant experience
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD or MD/PhD (or equivalent) in biological sciences
  • Chaperone biology, structural biology, and development of novel antifungal drugs with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and a strong publication record in molecular chaperones and anti-fungal development
This is a restricted position with no set end date and continued employment is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.
