Angelo State University is seeking a dynamic and energetic person to be the next Chair and lead in growing the David L. Hirschfeld Department of Engineering. Angelo State is a teaching-focused, Hispanic Serving Institution and member of the Texas Tech University System. The department hosts existing programs in civil engineering and mechanical engineering.
The department is young having admitted its first students in 2015. The current enrollment is 93 civil engineering and 171 mechanical engineering students. Both programs are ABET accredited. The department’s strategic plans including growing enrollment by 10% per year. The department would like to start an electrical engineering program within the next 3-5 years.
This is a full-time tenured nine-month with a half-time summer appointment.
Job Duties
- Lead the development of culturally responsive, integrated, practice oriented engineering curricula.
- Recruit engineering faculty needed for the program.
- Manage grant, equipment and facilities budgets.
- Teach, develop, and continuously improve courses and labs to support the curriculum.
- Direct the assessment efforts to support program improvement and ABET accreditation.
- Advise undergraduate students.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of undergraduate education, coursework, and challenges, and how they fit within the broader engineering curriculum.
- Familiarity with engineering education research and ability to apply best practices.
- Knowledge of the ABET accreditation process.
- Ability to perform formative and summative assessment of student learning and apply results of assessment to improve student learning.
- Ability to create active, innovative student learning environments and effectively apply technology to improve student learning.
- Ability to create environments conducive to the academic success of women, Hispanic, and other underrepresented student groups.
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field
- Effective communication, teamwork, and management skills
- Experience in the ABET accreditation process
- Experience in course and curriculum development
- A demonstrated level of teaching, scholarship, and service sufficient for appointment as a tenured associate or full professor at Angelo State University.
