JOB SUMMARY :
The Academia and Health Services Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at Texas Southern University offers postdoctoral research scientist in natural, public health or behavioral science the foundational scientific and career development training necessary for a successful career in academia and health services research. This is a two-year fellowship program. The fellow will receive research training and individualized one-on-one research mentoring, supported by a multidisciplinary team of investigators with social, behavioral, public health, and clinical expertise in minority health and health disparity research. This is a full-time research training experience that includes opportunities to conduct basic, clinical, social, and/or behavioral research, especially on maternal child health disparities and multiple factors (individual, social, environmental) that contributed to the disparities. The ideal candidate for this position will be an individual who completed a doctoral degree with the skillset to conduct social, behavioral, or environmental studies and a desire to pursue academia career. The objectives of the fellowship are to train the fellow to become an independent investigator pursuing an academic position (e.g. Assistant Professor).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :
The Postdoctoral Fellow is a postdoctoral scientist in health disparities research and academia. The Postdoctoral Fellow is a highly collaborative, self-motivated, creative person who is adaptable to new processes with capacity to function independently. The Postdoctoral Fellow is interested in maternal health and health disparities topics.

This is a Grant Funded position.

Essential Duties Summary

Research Training and Education (~70%)
  • Participate in formalized research training curriculum and seminars
  • Complete the University’s teaching certificate program
  • Complete research tasks assigned by mentors
  • Conduct literature search and review research topics
  • Participate and present in multidisciplinary journal club
  • Prepare and present research findings at local and national conferences
  • Prepare and submit manuscripts for publications
  • Prepare applications for funding, as appropriate to fellow’s research interests and goals
  • Establish a research lab on environmental toxicology analysis (for basic scientist)
Teaching (~30%)
  • Support teaching and learning in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences program through lectures, interactive lessons, and assessments in maternal health-related topics

$55,038.89 - $70,174.59

Education

Ph.D. in Public Health, Environmental Toxicology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

Work Experience
  • Additional training or certification in public health, social determinants of health, or related fields is preferred.
  • Bilingual e.g.: Spanish, Asian dialects, etc preferred.
Working/Environmental Conditions
  • Routine office environment, sitting or standing in one location much of the time
  • Willingness to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the program
  • Works closely with direct report to complete assigned tasks and activities in research
  • Some travel locally and to surrounding counties in the greater Houston area is expected (~10%)
