Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Education

Ohio University
Ohio University invites expressions of interest and
nominations for the position of Associate Dean of Research and
Graduate Education of the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of
Engineering and Technology. The appointment may begin as
early as January 2022 but no later than July 1,
2022.
Chartered in 1804, Ohio University is the state’s first institution of higher education and one of America’s oldest public universities. Today, OHIO is classified as a Research University with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation. There are nearly 18,000 undergraduate students enrolled in over 250 programs of study across nine of the University’s 11 colleges, which include 15 schools and numerous departments. With a main campus in Athens, five regional campuses, and a strong outreach/eLearning program, the University has an enrollment of over 36,000 students. The city of Athens has a population of 25,000 and is located in southeastern Ohio along the Hocking River with abundant outdoor recreation opportunities nearby and a culturally rich college town atmosphere.
The Russ College of Engineering and Technology is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as #132 among undergraduate engineering colleges offering doctoral degrees. The college has seven academic departments: Aviation, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Engineering Technology and Management, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering (including a new program in Energy Engineering). Russ College is best in class with a $180 million endowment to educate future generations of engineers and technologists who create for good.
Reporting to the Dean of the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Education oversees the research and graduate activities of the college. He/she collaborates closely with dean’s other leadership team members as well as others across the University to coordinate cross-disciplinary research, and graduate residential and online programs.
The ideal candidate will have a distinguished record of scholarly, professional, and creative achievement, the ability to expand the research profile of the College, a collaborative approach to leadership, and model high ethical standards. In addition, the Associate Dean will possess good budgetary and financial management skills.
Minimum Qualifications: We require
an earned doctorate in one of the Russ College general fields of
study, with eight years or more of professional experience.
The preferred candidate will have at least five years’ experience
in a leadership role such as chair or director.
The ideal candidate will also have achieved a distinguished record of scholarly, professional, and creative achievement sufficient for an appointment as Associate Professor or Full Professor in one of the programs within the College. In addition, we are looking for an individual who possesses leadership experience and background to:
- Be an effective and collegial member of the college leadership team to advance the college’s strategic goals.
- Oversee the operation of the college’s graduate office, research-related office, centers, and laboratories, and supervise pre-award, grant editing and research-related personnel and graduate office staff members.
- Develop and successfully implement an operational plan for enhancing graduate student recruitment, enrollment, student services, and student mentoring.
- Develop and implement strategies for promoting research innovation and interdisciplinary research collaborations.
- Engage and mentor junior faculty
- Play a key role in college strategic planning and academic management
- Have ability for fiscal management of the graduate office and programs
- Other duties as assigned by the Dean
