Shepherd University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of English, with a specialty in early English (medieval/Renaissance) literature, beginning August 2025. Responsibilities would include teaching Shakespeare and other courses in medieval and Early Modern literatures, as well as composition and rhetoric and assuming leadership of the departmental early drama troupe. The position includes a 4/4 teaching load.
Minimum Qualifications:
ABD in English or Comparative Literature, as long as the dissertation defense happens before August 2025; college-level teaching experience; significant graduate-level course work in medieval and Early Modern literature; significant graduate-level course work in Shakespeare
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in English or Comparative Literature with a specialization in medieval or Renaissance literature; college-level experience teaching Shakespeare; familiarity with the history of the English language; a sensitivity to the challenges faced by economically disadvantaged, first-generation, and underprepared college students; an active scholarly agenda, even if it has only recently begun; engagement with campus and community initiatives; some experience with theatrical performance
Job Duties:
Teaching 12 credit hours of classes per academic year in a 4/4 load; teaching each semester a mix of composition/rhetoric, sophomore-level literature surveys as part of the University’s Core Curriculum, Shakespeare, and upper-level literature seminars for majors and minors; after the first year of employment, engagement in service to the Department, the University, and the community (e.g., advising majors, serving on committees, engaging in curricular development, participating in assessment and accreditation efforts, staffing open houses for prospective and new students and their parents); on-going professional development such as conference presentations and publications, as well as training in pedagogy, writing instruction, etc.
