Administrative Director

Job Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR) seeks a dynamic partner to serve as Director of Faculty Engagement in Innovation and Translation. The Director will report to the Associate VPR for Innovation and Translation (AVPRIT).

The position will work closely with the Technology Licensing Office (TLO) and Utah Venture Hub (UVH) to accelerate the U of U's leading impact on IP, tech transfer, and commercialization across campus - particularly through startup creation and support. In addition, this position plays a pivotal role at the intersection between university faculty, industry partners, the Salt Lake business community, and the TLO in order to enhance communication and productive relationships.



Responsibilities
Strong organizational and communication skills are essential, including the ability to work with faculty, staff and students across campus, entrepreneurs, investors, external industry partners, and senior University leaders.

The candidate will be familiar with research across campus and have demonstrated strengths in interdisciplinary research partnerships/relationships. Masters degree in technical field required (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Work with UVH and TLO to achieve the vision and mission of the VPR and the UofU's commercialization goals; to lead, grow and support the research activities on campus. Represent the team across the entire campus and at local and national meetings.

Work closely with the UVH and TLO on developing and implementing strategic plans for growing the University of Utah startup portfolio efficiently and effectively. Create and support infrastructure to form and launch startup companies in the including guiding proof of concept funding to early-stage investment of companies.

Engagement with faculty to create and enhance entrepreneurial ecosystem. Work with existing UofU accelerators, e.g., CMI accelerator, therapeutics accelerator, etc., and other UofU initiatives to increase the number of annual startups.

Identify commercial development opportunities that leverage U of U research assets.

Liaise between the state's Innovation Center and University of Utah to collaborate and leverage existing resources to support commercialization.

Promote and maintain a culture of entrepreneurship among faculty for enhancing engagement in technology transfer.

Provide support to the AVPRIT to ensure successful, productive programs.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); nine years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, staff management, and effective communications skills required.

This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.
