University of Maryland School of Medicine Office of Public Affairs & Communications
We are seeking an experienced Lead Web Developer, Data Visualization, and AI Specialist to join the University of Maryland School of Medicine web communications team. The main goal of this position is to be able to provide web development, back-end web layouts, functionality, and other enhancements utilizing the Terminal Four web content management system (training will be provided). The ability to use various Data Visualization tools and frameworks, such as Force Simulation, D3 JavaScript library, Power BI, TensorFlow, PyTorch, D3.js, Plotly, or Tableau, to create interactive and dynamic data visualizations, Leveraging AI techniques, such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, or generative design.

Primary Functions:
- Independently creates, builds, and maintains well designed
website(s) with effective interactive and transactional functions
for the School of Medicine, building website back-end functionality
(layouts, pages, navigation, architecture, applications, features,
content types, and styles) using languages such as HTML, CSS,
JavaScript, Java, and PHP and web content management
application/development. Enhances user appeal and utility of web
environments using contemporary development languages.
- Leads the support of Content Management Systems and Cascading
Style Sheets (CSS). Develops custom content types with the Terminal
Four CMS environment.
- Lead the development and execution of project work plans.
Revises project plan, in consultation with upper management, to
meet changing needs and requirements and enforces coding
standards.
- Ensures documentation is up-to-date and features, technical
specifications, and infrastructure requirements for self-produced
technical work and job processes.
- Identifies and addresses browser, client server, and internet
systems specific architecture compatibility issues. Address HTML
and scripting compatibility and integration issues between
different browsers and computing platforms utilizing various design
methodologies and object-oriented environments.
- Conducts and maintains setup, installation, and management of
software and applications as needed by School of Medicine or
department.
- Creates Data Visualization driven graphics, such as charts,
plots, infographics, MP4 videos, and animations.
- Works with department director, web designers, web editors and
other internal clients to create websites, pages, and web-based
solutions.
- Creates and edits imagery using Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe
Illustrator.
- Communicates and meets with web team and internal stake holders
to gather and refine requirements and specifications for web
content development within agreed-upon timelines.
- Works within a small team of web and communication
professionals, but also works independently on individual web
development projects.
- Plans, designs, and implements web development application
solutions, and resolve bugs in solutions developed.
- Assists and trains other staff associated with web
development.
- Recognizes system deficiencies and implements effective
solutions.
- Interfaces backend databases (SQL and/or Oracle) with database
administrators to maximized function and effectiveness of web
applications.
- Translates functional requirements into technical design and
development projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor’s Information Technology, Web Development, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering, or a related field
Experience: Five (5) years of related experience with knowledge of at least two (2) structured web development languages and relational database management systems. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures (i.e., JavaScript, PHP, Java, MySQL, C++, CGI and, HTML/CSS, Microsoft Power BI, D3, TensorFlow, Pytorch, Plotly, Tableu, Python, Index Server, DALL-E, Chat GPT, Google Cloud, Grammerly, etc.).
OR
Equivalent of nine (9) years combination of formal information systems and web education, training, or experience with knowledge of at least (2) structured web development and relational database management systems.
Preferred Experience: Experience with back-end development for Terminal Four web content management system experience a huge PLUS, but training will be provided.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of various tools and frameworks, such as (Force
Simulation) using D3 JavaScript library, TensorFlow, PyTorch,
Plotly, or Tableau.
- Skill using Data Visualization software.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Ability to take a logical, analytical, and creative approach to
problem solving and pays close attention to detail. Merging the web
development world with the front-end user-based results.
- Able to work either independently or as part of a team on both
small and large development projects.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and
maintain close working relationships with business stakeholders and
other technologists.
- The ability to multitask within the time constraints set by
internal clients / entities.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
