Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering

Leung Research Group, Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering

Postdoctoral Fellow in metaoptics research

The Leung Research group at Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering in Bloomington, Indiana invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position from highly driven and creative people who are excited to develop state-of-the-art biophotonic technologies using novel light manipulation strategies.  The researcher who joins our team for this  project will spearhead the development of metasurfaces and meta-optics capable of non-invasively studying the adaptive mechanisms in living systems.  We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in metaoptics, biosensing, and structured light.  The ideal start date for the position is January 1, 2025 (negotiable).

The Leung Research Group’s vision is to develop impactful optical imaging and sensing technologies capable of deciphering the rules of life. Our group seeks to sculpt and exploit the various degrees of freedom of light to create tailored optical beams that strengthen our capability to extract structural and functional information from biosystems. Our research is powered by an interdisciplinary team with expertise in optics, imaging, quantum physics, and computer science.

We seek candidates who possess excellent professionalism and enthusiasm in their work, good communication skills which promote positive interactions in the lab, strong ability to problem-solve and think critically, and ability to thrive in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary, fast-paced working environment.  Experiences and/or knowledge in one or more of the following areas is preferred but not required: Biosensing, nanophotonics design, wavefront sensing, optical imaging design, or imaging with sculpted/structured light.

We are committed to providing all members of our group a collaborative, supportive, and motivating academic environment with abundant opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary active collaborations and teamwork to expand their knowledge and skillset and to exercise creativity and innovation in their research work. Your successful career development is important to us, and we will invest in the development of your leadership, mentorship, and scientific writing/publication skills, presentation skills, and grants writing skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Holds a Ph.D. in physics, optics, engineering, photonics, or other related fields.
  • Ph.D. candidates about to graduate are welcome to apply
  • Demonstrated understanding of optics and photonics
  • Experience with either optical wave propagation simulations (e.g., Finite-Difference Time-Doman, Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis, FEM) for metaoptics or experimental experience with metaoptics

Salary:  We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus generous benefits.

Appointment Type:  Twelve-month full-time non-tenure track appointment with potential to be extended annually, subject to satisfactory performance and funding.
