Assistant, Associate, or Full (Tenure/Tenure-Stream) Position

Black Studies in Teacher Education

Position:   Assistant, Associate, or Full (tenure/tenure-stream)

Appointment:  Eight-month, full-time, tenure-stream: starting Fall 2022

The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading in the University of Pittsburgh School of Education seeks a colleague in Black pedagogical traditions to join our programs in Teacher Education. Specifically, we seek a scholar and educator whose work is organized by Black pedagogical praxes--such as those from Freedom School and Black Power independent school movements--and anchored clearly in Black theoretical traditions. Finally, we seek a scholar whose work engages a range of educational organizations, contexts, and participants, including, but not limited to, teachers, non-certified educational staff, families, and/or communities.

The successful candidate will join us at an exciting time in the School’s history as we are currently engaged in re-imagining teacher education (https://www.education.pitt.edu/news-and-media/school-receives-2-million-grant-transform-teaching-and-teacher-education), including launching a new 4-year undergraduate teacher education program (https://www.education.pitt.edu/news-and-media/historic-moment-undergraduate-teaching-degree-created-pitt-school-education), transforming our practice by centering Black pedagogies and Black and Indigenous knowledge traditions, engaging in deep partnership work with communities and schools, and rethinking the use of technology in teaching in online and hybrid settings. While this position description is not restricted to a particular content area (STEM, Literacy, or Special Education, for example) or certification range (secondary or primary), we invite applicants to consider their connections to our existing scholarship and training programs for undergraduate, master’s, PhD, and/or EdD students.

Required qualifications:

  • PhD in Education, Africana Studies, or related field/discipline by 8/1/22
  • Record of scholarly work in teaching and teacher education in Black Educational Traditions, including, but not limited to, the Black Radical Tradition, Black fugitivity, Critical Race Theory, and Black Feminisms
  • Experience preparing educators (for public K-12 schools, with community organizations, through traditional or alternative pathways, or other)
  • Record of peer-reviewed publication and success with (or promise of) external funding for scholarship and/or practice/engagement work.

Salary and Rank

Rank will be commensurate with experience and subject to the University of Pittsburgh promotion and tenure process.  Salary will be commensurate with rank.

Application Instructions:

Applicants should submit:

  • Letter of application
  • CV
  • One writing sample

Full consideration will be given to complete applications submitted by October 24, 2021 to https://cfopitt.taleo.net/careersection/pitt_faculty_external/jobdetail.ftl?job=21006365&tz=GMT-04%3A00&tzname=America%2FNew_York and will continue until position is filled.
