Job Summary:

Academic Success Coach assists students in developing skills, behaviors, and habits that
contribute to success in college. Academic Success Coaches provides guidance, encouragement, and practical strategies to help students with varying backgrounds to excel academically and make the most of their college experience. This position will provide individualized and small group instruction to augment student’s strategic learning skills in college.

Education and Experience:
  • Position requires a AA/AS degree, plus a minimum of two year’s, full time teaching or experience providing instructional support or assisting students with individualized assistance in reading, writing, communication, and/or learning strategies in a college setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position.
  • Must have the ability to use Academic Coaching best practices and appropriate materials for delivering coaching strategies and interventions to learners.
  • Requires excellent human relations, problem-solving, accountability, and excellent written, oral, and technological communication skills.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Requires strong communication skills to effectively interact with students
    with diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as relevant to academic success.
  • Willing to learn and keep up on the knowledge of campus department partners for
    consultation and referrals, and of academic curriculum to give general academic advice and make referrals.
  • Requires a working and theoretical knowledge of academic coaching principles and practices
    and techniques sufficient to instruct students and adjust methods to individual needs.
  • Requires demonstrated ability to independently perform the essential responsibilities and
    take initiative to identify and solve problems.
  • Must have the organizational skills to prioritize tasks and to complete assignments accurately, neatly, and efficiently.
  • Requires the ability to assess and sensitively respond to the learning needs of diverse students.
  • Requires ability to operate general office equipment, including computers with word processing, database, and college supported technologies students have access to, and appointment scheduling software.
Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience working at the college level is preferred.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Requires the ability to operate a computer and other office equipment, distribute class materials and to communicate in writing with students.
  • Requires ability to comprehend written and spoken language, accurately processing words and numbers, in person and via the telephone.
  • Must be able to move among students in the work environment to provide individualized
    support.
  • Work is performed in a high-activity instructional service area involving background conversations, frequent multitasking, frequent interruptions, and a focus on immediate
    response to students’ diverse needs.
  • Moderate time is spent working at a computer.
  • Work hours may occasionally include night or weekend hours.
  • Assignments may include any LBCC campus or center location.
Essential Duties:
  1. Helps build strong one-on-one coaching relationships with students by offering academic support. Conducts academic success coaching through individual or group sessions that help students assess their own performance and develop academic success plans by setting
    academic goals, developing study plans, managing time effectively, and utilizing campus
    learning resources. As needed prepares and supports group workshops for both students and staff.
  2. Guides students to set short-term goals, providing constructive feedback and motivation along the way. Assist students in identifying academic challenges, exploring potential solutions, and developing problem-solving skills using student centered intentions.
  3. Maintain regular communication with students through in-person meetings, virtual sessions, emails, or group workshops, fostering an open and approachable environment for sharing concerns and seeking advice, while fostering problem-solving techniques.
  4. Identifies and helps students build critical connections to academic support services (such as Math Café/Math Help Desk, Tutoring, the Writing Desk, Accessibility Resources, etc.),
    workshops, and other opportunities aimed at enhancing their learning experience and personal growth.
  5. Builds critical connections between the student and the college to enhance persistence and retention.
  6. Shares effective study techniques, note-taking methods, test preparation strategies, and
    stress management techniques to empower students to succeed in their coursework.
  7. Maintain records of student interactions, progress reports, and outcomes, in compliance with FERPA regulations and providing insights to supervisor on the effectiveness of Academic Success Coaching.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned.
