The Department of History at UNC Charlotte invites applications for a position as Lecturer or
Assistant Teaching Professor beginning August 11, 2025. The salary for this position is $55,000
(Lecturer) or $66,000 (Assistant Teaching Professor). The position is for an initial term of three
years with the possibility of reappointment pending satisfactory performance.
Required qualifications: M.A. in History or a related field for a lecturer, with a specialization in
U.S. history at time of appointment; teaching experience at the college/university level, a
commitment to serving UNC Charlotte students of all backgrounds, and an ability to teach North
Carolina history.
Desired qualifications: Ph.D. in History for an Assistant Teaching Professor, and the ability to
contribute to the minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. We are especially interested in
applications from historians with expertise in one or more of the following areas: gender,
sexuality, LGBTQ+, politics, military, law, film, medicine and health, or foreign policy.
Within a 4-4 teaching load, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses that serve
history majors as well as a US History course in the general education program. They will also
contribute service to the department, college, and university. They will demonstrate teaching
excellence by using effective instructional strategies, designing and implementing curricula,
formulating and measuring course goals, expectations, and outcomes, and providing effective
oral and/or written feedback to student learning.
This position will have its home in the History Department. The department employs 30
full-time and 5 part-time faculty members. Degree programs include the B.A. in History
(approximately 300 students) and the M.A. in History (approximately 50 students). We offer
public and applied history courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and the department’s
MA program features a special concentration in Public History. The department also works
closely with other departments and programs across the College, including Africana Studies,
Latin American Studies, Capitalism Studies, International Studies, Religious Studies, Legal
Studies, Medical Humanities, Women and Gender Studies, and American Studies. It also houses
several journals and professional associations, including the Journal of Urban History, First
World War Studies, and French Historical Studies.
As the largest and most academically diverse college at UNC Charlotte, the College of
Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences houses 15 departments, 18 interdisciplinary programs,
and 6 applied centers. We offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs
