Classroom Assistant
Job Summary
The Student Parent Support Center provides information, support, and family resources for University students, faculty, staff, and patients. The Student Parent Support Center programs are NAEYC accredited and serve children birth to six years.
We offer part-time and full-time programming in three campus child care programs for students, faculty, and staff and drop-in child care for patients visiting the three U Health Centers throughout the Salt Lake Valley. The Student Parent Support Center performs a vital role at the University of Utah, by providing information and support to students, faculty, staff, and early childhood practitioners.
We are experiencing unprecedented growth which provides for positions available at all UKids programs. These include Campus Child Care Programs (UKids -Presidents Circle, UKids - East Village, and UKids-Guardsman Way). Multiple openings and continuous hiring. Responsibilities
1 .Develop weekly projects and provide appropriate activities.
2 .Communicate effectively with professionals, parents, and children.
3. Extinguishes, or lessens, inappropriate behavior and redirects children to appropriate actions by applying Positive Child Guidance techniques to help children learn to manage their own behavior in a positive manner.
4. Teaches and leads children in music and movement to help them develop memory, verbal skills, and a love for music.
5. Assists children with physical necessities, toileting, medical emergencies, etc. to give proper care and, where appropriate, facilitate development.
6. Keep accurate records of client's program usage.
7 .Maintains a healthy and safe environment for children by sanitizing materials daily, and operating within State Licensing Guidelines.
8. Promotes leadership skills within a classroom team.
9. Demonstrate the ability to work independently, but show a willingness to take direction from the supervisor.
10. Must be warm, energetic, and enjoy working with young children (18 mo. to 8years of age)
11. Demonstrates consistent attendance and punctuality.
12. Other duties as assigned.
Must meet physical characteristics needed for the performance of all job duties (with or without the use of aids):
1. Sufficient vision to read small printed material as well as long distances across playgrounds and classrooms for child supervision.
2. Sufficient hearing to hear normal and telephone conversation
3. Ability to speak in an understandable manner.
4. Tone with sufficient volume to be heard in an office and/or a busy classroom environment.
5. Lift small children (up to 30 lbs.)
6. Carry small children in arms for short distances.
7. Move about on hands and knees and sit on the floor with children.
8. Exhibits physical stamina necessary for daily interaction with young children (walking, kneeling, sitting on floor, lifting up to 30 lbs., etc.)
9. Ability to sit at computer and perform repetitive motions.
10. Physical dexterity to use a pen or pencil in a legible format, operate a computer keyboard and other devices.
Minimum Qualifications
This is an entry-level position. Training will be provided. Must demonstrate an interest in learning about child development and guidance; a willingness to take direction from the assigned teacher; willing to obtain a food handlers permit, TB test, Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) background check, first aid training are required. Demonstrated human relation and effective human relations skills are also required.
Must be 18 years old and have a GED or high school diploma.
