Job Details
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Swarthmore College invites applications for a one-year full-time faculty position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian to begin in Fall 2025. The teaching load is two courses per semester, which include intensive elementary Russian language (Fall 001- Spring 002) and two courses on literature and culture, possibly including “Russian and East European Science Fiction” and “The Muslim in Russia.”

Qualifications
Native or near-native English and Russian. PhD in hand by August 2025. The successful candidate will have experience teaching Russian language at levels from beginning to advanced and teaching literature and culture in both English and Russian. Expertise in other areas of Eastern Europe or Central Asia or in minority languages and cultures of the Russian Federation, as well as environmental studies and other interdisciplinary approaches, is especially welcome.

The teaching statement should describe the applicant’s interests in teaching at an undergraduate institution, previous teaching experience, and approach to teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds. The research statement should describe the applicant’s program of research (including research interests, recent and current research, and anticipated areas for future work) and its potential to engage undergraduate students. At least one letter of recommendation should comment specifically on teaching.
